porting the 58mm throttle body

Had a go at the throttle body porting and polishing today - as Andyroo said - quite theraputic :lol: . Its my only TB so I didnt want to do a Mark Verboom 😃 , so on the engine side of the throttle body there was a lump- this has no interaction with the butterfly as you rotate it - but I decided not to get rid of this lump - is it safe to get rid and not end up with an error code?

the arrowed section in red is the bit I am talking about (the bit that Vocky noted as being a thin section of alloy).
Initially it revved up to 2000rpm then back down to normal, does seem to rev more cleanly now from low revs, but if I can get rid of this extra section then it will be better I think (barring error codes).

you cannot remove that section, it is part of the tickover area cheers..

the picture shows a finished tb and it's still there......

All the little bits probably help improve flow slightly, but Im sure the main problem is the dip in the metal on entry, which must kick the air back in on itself, which then slows it down. Getting rid of that ridge is probably going to make the most difference in my opinion

Ahh, thats alright then - dont want to underdo or overdo it 🙂 , couldnt really tell from the photo if the ridge was still there- difficult to see it.
It is definately smoother when the car is cold now between gearchanges and when revving. Seem to be less 'flatspots'.

I know what you mean about those ridges towards the outside - they are pretty pronounced steps- why are they there then? notsure.gif Seems a bit silly to me.

I have a Vauxhall recycling scrappy down the road from me and I just wanted to check that the 58mm tb is the same for all the z22se engines? Also how much would you expect to pay for a working second hand one??

Ive heard 30-50 quid mentioned but I wouldnt bother - just use your existing one - takes a couple of hours and as long as you dont go 'deepthroat' with the dremel you will be fine :lol: . There is always the temptation to stick it in as far as it will go but you have to resist mate.

the going rate seems to be £30 for a 2.2 tb dunno..

a breakers would want £50 or more :?

Id only buy a spare if you were going to put in countersunk bolts and go close to the butterfly, or if you have Parkinsons or something. For a bit of careful material removing, theres little you can do wrong!

You should be alright as long as you dont go at it with a chainsaw? You'd have to be pretty distracted and for a long time to get it wrong :?

if they accidently touch the tickover area the tb could be scrap :shock:

but if they do as you say, take it easy, then it should be fine 😃

I got rid of it :cry:

But it seems to be ok :? Tickover little bit erratic when it starts but then settles down. throttle response seeems a lot better dunno.. .........should I be concerned, I have no errors logged?

don't worry I have removed it before, it just causes a highish start up tickover before it settles

it does go better without it, BUT the alloy is extremely thin at that point and I advise to steer well clear of it, just in case cheers..

im not guna port mine :lol:

since im sticking to 58mm TB with my (hopefully) soon to arrive 2.4 inlet im just guna wait till some1with a ported TB put on their 68mm and then buy that showo..

so if one of u guys read this, pm me and we"ll work something out ^^

here's a couple of pics of my original 58mm throttle body

the left-hand tb has the shaft flattened, this increases flowrate, but is optional, the right-hand (standard) tb has black arrows pointing to the alloy to be removed

the left-hand tb shows the countersunk screws, these increase flowrate, the RED arrow points to a very thin section of alloy - be careful !

the right-hand (standard) tb has a black arrow pointing to the alloy to be removed

Vocky - a little confused with what metal needs to go. In the first picture, I understand the thick lip going at the top, presumably smoothed to just above where the butterfly closes, but how much and where on the bottom - ie above where the butterfly closes? Am I right in thinking that nothing comes off where the butterfly touches the TB in its original state. Also on the underside of the TB can I remove anything? The post on page 5 of the thread suggests that it can't......? Welcome any help. Thanks Paul

Just to confirm - top arrow piece done, not sure how close to butterfly I can go on bottom arrow....

One bottom pic - am I removing the ridge where the black arrow is, or just opening up the edge? Clearly not wanting to bugger the idle. Cheers Paul

just don't go near where the butterfly sits and where the butterfly is fully closed (when you press it shut) :thumbup:
