Air bag light.

I have an air bag light on the dash, it was on when i bought the car, i have read the codes with my reader which showed no faults found, i have also disconnected the battery for two hours to no avail. Someone before me has obviously investigated this as the rear ashtray was out and the elastic clips that hold the drivers seat material in place were undone, i am guessing that it is going to need a replacement ECU, my question is, are the ECU's inter changeable between different models should i go down the second hand route?
I have heard that the air bag ECU is not mapped to the car and that i have to get one from a none crashed car if i get a second hand one is this true?
One last question, can they be repaired/reset off the car?

could just be a broken wire or bad connection? you need a better code reader to show the codes / find the fault. where abouts are you?

Dave, no i am not sure at all, i suspect electrical because of the apparent investigation clues.

Replaced air bag ECU with a secondhand unit and all ok. For anyone contemplating doing this, make absolutely sure the replacement ECU is identical to yours with the same part number as there are loads of different ones, make sure the donor car has not deployed the airbags and do not attempt to remove or replace with the battery connected.
