Not 100% sure but I would imagine the benefit would be similar to a lightened flywheel, that is to reduce the rotating mass of the engine. Basically to reduce the amount of weight the engine has to spin round, therefore making it more responsive.
Some bottom pulleys are well heavy, so a lightened one could only be a good thing !!!
