Advise on my rebuild needed from those in the know

Hello all,

I signed up on here a short while ago when the chain went on my Vectra.

I've been slowly taking it apart and i can now see the damage that's been done but i know very little about this engine. However i've spent many evenings reading posts on here which has helped me massively up to this point and i'm now starting to look at what i'm going to need to put it back together.

My local motor factors doesn't really list much in the way of parts for these lumps and also i'm not sure what the quality of the parts are like and i'm thinking on something like this it needs to be good quality stuff to reduce any chance of this happening again.
I've still got to find out where the rest of the tensioner has gone (some was still in the head, some was in the bottom of the timing cover) i've got to remove the sump to look further and also look at the pistions as there are some small marks on the top from colliding with the valves.

My question is Where and what kind of brand is best for buying the chain kits (it seems to make sense to change the balance chain while i'm there) and gaskets/seals etc? Also i'm going to need a handful of valves and guides. (at least 8 of them are bent)

I haven't come across the oil jet that feeds the chain with oil as yet but i assume the timing kit will come with the new and updated version so i will know what i'm looking at from that?

z22se shop for gaskets chains and bolts its all down to budget but fai or gm parts are very good
ebay for valve guides
and theres a full set of valves and springs in the z22se for sale section 🙂

I would advise genuine gm parts over pattern parts if your budget will allow?
also what miles has your car done? and what age is it as there was an updated oil pump fitted along with the updated oil jet.

I would like to use all the proper GM parts as i want to do it properly and i want it to last. If thats whats most of you guys use then thats what i'll get.

It's one of the last of the 'B's on a '02 plate that's just clicked over 97,000. Looking at what ive found left of the tensioner and also having a '03 plate Zafira that seems to have come out of the factory with that update, i now belive my vectra has gone all this time on the early version and probably never went back to get the update.

I had my Vectra from 6months old, it was 1 of the first z22se, august 2000 first reg. it never had a recall for the jet or pump. went on to do 117k before head cracked then I did a full rebuild, rebored, new head complete, crank was in good order so just new shells, new cams, followers and lifters, all genuine gm parts except cam that were shrick ones. came to around £4k for all the parts.
