The Horror that is.....WHEEL BEARING CHANGE!

Has anyone attempted this without the aid of a garage, as specialist reckons the part is £180 +vat then the fitting costs, bringing the ordeal to around £280!!!!!

Autovaux do the part for £75 delivered so was tempted to try it myself

any insight?

front or back ?

front needs pressing out, then pressing back in - other than that it's all nuts and bolts

From memory the back comes as a complete unit,so a doddle to change..

its the front ones, they are a full assembly too, or so ive been told notsure.gif

Front one is a bearing which needs to be pressed into the hub,rears come as a hub assembly..

Daz, remove the hub as you say its nuts n bolts, the take it with the new bearing to a garage and say can someone press this for me and say you dont mind not having a reciept and you`ll collect it at the end of the day, chances are they will only charge you sommut daft like a tenner. It does happen.

I have changed the front bearing on my astra. It is a sealed unit with the abs ring etc and is a bolt over swap. No more than one hour. It really is not difficult. It did not require any bearings to be pressed in or out. It is defo a whole unit with the wheel bolt flange, check with your supplier, but this is defo what i did on my astra 2001 coupe.

This page shows Astra Mk4 wheel bearings, front, as a complete unit. This is where I got mine from and as prev post, a doddle to fit.

I think photoboy is referring to the Astra, as his info on the side says Astra.

Done this on my Astra. Bought a complete hub-assembly from Essport (our local motor-factors) complete with abs wiring for £98. (Curtiss Vauxhall quoted me near £200!)

It should have been a diy job and I had it sussed, but the ball-joint of the track-rod-end was spinning hoplessly it the hub carrier so I ended up getting it into a garage.

In short, yes... piss easy mate. 😃
