Dave i really attribute the longevity of my chain/engine to the oil. The stuff i use is in the link below. I have no affiliation with the company by the way.....im not trying to sell their products.....

My engine has the same fuel consumption now as when new. 40MPG on the highway and 28mpg in the city. The engine compression is still the same as when new ( 170-175 psi across all four cylinders). When i read of people on this forum using mineral oil or semi synthetics i just don't understand why they would bother. Many so called fully synthetic oils are actually only highly refined mineral oils also.....you need to read the label and make sure you are getting a group 4 PAO/ESTER full synthetic oil if that's what u want to buy.....if you do buy that, ur engine is going to last!!!!!
That said, you have all got me paranoid now and i will whip off the cam cover to check for chain slack but i dont there is any - chain is dead silent as far as i can tell....
