tapping noise, but not tappets

Hi,

I have owned my astra 2003 z22se for about a year now. Not my first choice in car but as me and partner split up and left me with £1000's of debts i had to sell my audi S4.

On tick over there are slight tick noise, and if you rev the car, the ticks speed up with the revs. Now i dont think its coming from the tappets.

I replaced the Exhaust manifold as the last one was split, and it still does it. It has done 85,000 miles full service history.

Also, on really cold mornings, the EM light comes on, no drop in power etc, and also on very long journeys it comes on, but as soon as you stop it goes off.

To top it off, when driving long journeys, the fuel gauge goes up.

Any help appreciated.

use a long screwdriver and listen for where the noise is coming from, just put your ear gently against the handle, quick and easy to locate the exact spot

do what vocky said, start her up and get your head at the back of the engine, tapping is usually Zaust manifold and deep tapping almost knocking sound is the chain

probably the timing chain, whats mileage? do you know if the chains have been done?
