Steering question

Here's a question for you all :-)

Firstly can I take my steering wheel off and set it at any point on the splines? or like renaults do they only go on one way on the master spline?

Reason being when doing my track rod ends I've set my new ones the same as it was tracked recently so it can't be far off however.. The o/s its wound up 17 and a half turns, the n/s is wound up nearly 40 turns but the steering wheel is straight.

Now when setting up the steering from scratch I've always thought the master spline on the column puts the steering rack straight you then wind both track rod ends the same amount ie 20 turns therefore giving you the same amount of turns left or right before hitting full lock?
Does that make sense? :confused:

I think I've figured it out if there was an imaginary line down the center of my van so it was bang on 50/50 on the steering mine currently more like 60/40 so I'll be setting that up better today I'm not having that..

there is no master spline for the steering wheel to column. how I would set it up is to set the rack mid way from full l/h to r/h lock then mount steering wheel to column so its straight, then adjust track rod ends to get correct toe setting.

Does the airbag come off via the two screws behind the wheel?

air bag is 2 torq screws at the rear tx27 or 30 i think
the wheel is movable on the spline one tx55 holding it on it think
to set the wheel up there is info on the airbag squib but the only way to get the wheels right is to take it to a garage and get the tracking done

I'm struggling to do anything today great ill get in with doing that, I will take it to a garage in Tuesday probably but last time they set it straight which was fine but there's not even turns both ways on the steering wheel and one track rod end is wound on a hell of a lot more than the other it just doesn't seem right so I thought if ruffly get it right then take it after.

ifrc its all the way left then 2.5 turns to the middle then fit the wheel
then make the hubs line up with planks on the floor
drive steady to the garage and get it set up
edit:- that might just be centring the air bag squib!

At the moment With the wheels ect on there's 1 and a half turns to either full lock but I'm still not happy that my centre line is right. Is it normal for one rod end to be wound on twice as much as the other surely the adjustment should be spread evenly across both sides?

Right both track rod ends are wound on 18 turns the wheels look reasonable maybe towing in abit and the steering wheels straight..
I'm going to take it round the block check it again then see if anywheres open to track it

I can't get it tracked untill Tuesday so I've put some Saab wheels on the front to save my tyres getting ruined

I just drove it to a mates house and apart from being abit wobbly from the tracking not being done it's so much nicer to drive.

Moment of truth it's being tracked now he didn't like it that I ticked the no test drive box 🙂

I forgot to say before taking it I changed the 2 inner tie ends as the old ones were heated up so much and bashed about now it's 0.00 l/h and 0.02 on the r/h for some reason it wouldn't go to 0 and apart from enough camber to stop the wheels rubbing that nice and straight now :-) next job top mounts and brakes all round..
