to get linux u need to format your to the linux type

software ie games,drivers are rare for the platform

but its faster than xp

I use it every day Baz, I've got it duel booting with Windows XP on my laptop.

Linux is free anyway to download.

Best thing to do is play with them all, and see what suites your style of use. Ubuntu comes with a live CD which you can run the OS to try without having to install it onto the HD.

I've got all the above on DVD's if you want a copy bringing to the rolling road if you don't want to download them.

I use Fedora Core 5. When installing, if you want to have it duel boot with Windowx XP, all you need to do is use something like Partition Magic to create some free space, and Fedora will automatically install on the empty space, and will also install the GRUB boot loader, which lets you select which OS you boot.

This is a common misconception now, as there are 1000's of developers working on Linux, all you need to do is learn how to use the OS, and make things work. Thats what I like about it.

Baz, I've also got a load of .pdf E-Books on Linux, which talk you though how it works, how to install, and get it up and running, whether you want to Desktop, Office, or Server install.

Yeah, and a lot more. It really depends on what you use it for to be honest. If you play games, you'll need XP, because games aren't designed for linux. But, for a normal desktop PC, which wants to browse the net, do word documents, slide shows, check e-mail ect, it's a lot better than XP. I have it for all the stuff I do on the web, because I've got my laptop set up as a webserver so I can test all the stuff I do before I upload it live. I also use it because of my job, using Telnet, SSH onto other Linux machines which we use at work. All the software on the boxes is coded for linux as well. It's a lot faster, and a lot more stable than windows, and fully configurable. Also, with it being open source, if you were a developer, you can develop your own software for it without needed to pay anyone to view to source to make it work.

There is shit loads of stuff on the web about it.
I'll upload one of the e-books I have on it tomorrow for you to have a read through.

All i do is browse the web etc,dont play games at all on the pc(thats wot consoles are for)..will ibe able to use flashfxp with it?

Is that an FTP software? If so, you wont be able to use it, because it's been coded for windows. All you need to do is install GFTP, which is what I use on there for File Transfer

Adding on from earlier, there is a new version of Fedora Core just been released, Fedora Core 6. This is...imo...a lot better than the old one. It uses the new GNOME desktop environment, which, when you apply the desktop effects, is the dogs danglies, and should be "aesthetically pleasing" to even the most hardcore XP fan.

For those that just want a quick try of linux you should download what they call a distro cd. This is a full linux operating system that runs off a bootable cd/usb key.

I would recommend trying the knoppix distro cd, these can be plugged into almost any PC and will not format your drives etc.

I use distro CD's alot as the security tools I use for my job are all based within various flavours of linux.

If you get to the point that you actually want to install it on a PC then having a look at Gentoo and Ubuntu which are both really very easy to configure.

The Ubuntu CD is also a "Live" CD, and you get the option to install it if you like it, otherwise, as Hades said, it leave the drives totally untouched. Fedora have also just released a "Live" version of Fedora Core 6 as well.

I've recently started using CentOS5 on my Laptop, and I use CentOS4 for all my servers at work (and also the one running this site).

Downloaded Mandrake One, probably could live with that but PCI Express hardware errors.

Fed up on the Fedora 9 download.

After extensive searching, screen shots etc i found **Linux XP 2008 **from Russia. Download only in Russian and on site links dont work so bought the 2.2Gb dvd from USA. Slow connection & P to P means it would take 2 to 3 weeks to download! Have you given Ubuntu a try? Their 64bit version is really good. The only reason I didn't stick with the new one is bacuse of the wireless support.

I'm running Fedora 9 64bit at the minute, and that works a treat.

How are you downloading Fedora 9? Via torrent or one of the direct download mirrors?

Just had another go at Fedora with Bittorrent was looking around 13 weeks to download. Direct much better in excess of 27hrs with Free download manager.

Open suse 11 just uploaded two hours ago, currently downloading the live 64bit Gnome, should be there in 18hrs. noth.

CLI is all we use at work mate, that's how I got into Linux. All our production boxes run a custom kernel on Red Hat 4 or SCO.
