been round my mates today ,he works as a mechanic full time but does work from home for extra cash ,anyway he had a astra cabrio 2.2 brought into him with lumpy idle ,the customer had recently had someone do both chains on it
so I set about stripping it down ,cam cover off to find it was way out on the inlet , the bottom pulley nut was a right bastard to get undone ,think it had been tightened with an airgun ,the bolts on the camshafts were nowhere tight enough
they had put a cheap kit on it a bga one ,it had no new bolts in the kit .I removed the 2 bolts from the black chain guide to find that obviously before the guide must have snapped and rubbed against the bolts as they were flat on one side, also the tensioner wasn't tensioned either pulled it apart and there was little shavings of metal so cleaned it all up and got it tensioned up properly, anyway got the chain off now onto the balance chain one of the bolts on one of guides had also been rubbed against the balance chain was on the wrong way round so that obviously wasn't timed up properly ,chain off to set the balance shafts exhaust set ,then onto the inlet to find there was no way of setting it as the front part of cog had been worn away from the chain ,so luckily I had a spare one to replace it
so the balance chain is all set ,cam chain all back on ,all rebuilt up and it runs a treat now ,all in it took me about 4 hrs that's an hour quicker than I done the wifes car 🙂
