Astra H timing chain replacement

Hey guys.

So basically I was hearing some really grotty sounding rattles under the bonnet and a noticeable drop in performance. So down the local garage I go and they tell me I need new timing chains. Which is fine, the car has done 80,000 miles most of those on motorways, no big deal right? Then they tell me it will cost around £1600 with parts an labour. And my warranty doesn't cover it as it's classed as wear and tear.

Now, I'm no mechanic but that seems a little steep right?!

Anybody shed any light or point me in a direction of somewhere or somebody that won't mug me off?

yes a garage will charge you 6 hours labour then the full cost for genuine gm parts on top

im a little confused tho which engine you have i've not seen a mk5 with ether the z22se or the z22yh in

i fit chains at a much lower rate 🙂

£1600 is quite steep, a pair of genuine chain kits parts are £250 from ebay, so £1350 labour :confused:

It's a z14xep engine. I was directed onto here by a friend. Tried a bunch of other forums but seem to be full of cowboys! Wanted some reliable advice!
Is it cool to pm you evocarlos, reckon you could turn your hand to my engine?

well i do the z22se and the z22yh engines mainly
i would need to find a fitting guide to make sure on the steps of fitting

z14xep are quite easy, but you do need the cam locking tools to do it.

You can lock the end of the cams with a suitable long 5mm diameter screwdriver and I made a tool for the crank.

You need to remove the water pump, then the chain casing, but not the sump or downpipe - even though Haynes manual says you need to do so :confused:
