Throttle Body Cleaning Q.?

Hi all, need a bit of advice please.

Was changing the jubilee clips that attach the inlet hose to the airbox and throttle body yesterday, they were very rusty and fragile looking.

When I lifted the hose off the top of the throttle body, I noticed that the butterfly and plenum(?) were gunked up with thick black slime!!! :shock:

Am sure this doesn't help performance or economy very much!

How do I clean it? Is it as easy as removing the T/B and blasting it through with squirty carb cleaner? The gasket between the T/B and inlet manifold is a rubber one IIRC? Can I re use this with a little high temp silicone on?

What about the inside of the inlet manifold? Is that something that needs occasionally cleaning out too? Think that would turn a small job into a big job! :?

Is there an Idle Speed Control Vlave on the 2.2??? Can someone point me in the right direction for it please? Do these need cleaning too?

just remove the top hose and squirt carb cleaner in the T/B then with a cloth wipe round as much as you can then with the engine running squirt carb cleaner into the T/B the car will try and stall but this is ok, don't squirt to much.

the gasket is re-usable and doesn't need any sealant

only 4 bolts and the plug hold the tb on

I moved the engine breather from the inlet pipe to the bottom of my airbox, this seems to have done the trick 🙂

I have just cleaned my TB for the second time. Seems to make the engine idle much better. There seems to be a fixed gap around the butterfly valve which I presume is for the idle. If this theory is correct it would explain why mine idles unevenly when the tb gets gunked up.

Is there a gizmo you can put inline of the manifold breather pipe to stop the oil getting back into the system or is moving the breather pipe the best way? I am sure I have read about the problems that other ecotecs (with idle control valves) have and that there is a device to help reduce it.

Mine's all done now, seems to run much better now, there was a lot of gunk around the butterfly.

Will be interested to find out what this device is.

Was looking at the breather that runs between the rocker cover and the inlet wondering if some sort of oil catch could be put in the line.

Am hoping that now the EGR is blanked on mine it will stay cleaner longer.

here's a pic which gives the general idea, the small filter is now inside my standard airbox, I simply drilled a hole and pushed the hose inside the bottom of the airbox and then refitted the filter

then blank off the stub on the air intake pipe
