a new problem

started the car yesterday and steering pump took longer then usual to start up so switched off engine and restarted and again took a while for the pump to star.
went today and same thing happened, but as im driving down the road im getting speedo needles jumping to 0 then back up and freezing, also the temp and petrol needle kept doing the same, completley lost power steering as im going down the road and the car started sound it was missfireing. if i kept revs high car would pull.

so get home and car wont start as battery is dead, soooo i get battery out of mrs car and took car for a spin after 10mins of fine normal driving the same symptoms happened again, also resulting is a flat battery. im thinking alternator i naffed??
any ideas ?

Sounds like the alternator at fault charge the battery up then check to the charging voltage check the connections
And earths

this was a bad earth the the battery and no charge from the alternator
i put a brand new regulator(£30) on the alternator as theres not much else to go wrong with them apart from the diodes both parts can be got quite cheap for a diy rebuild of the alternator

my issue was the belt was not driving the alternator
so as said best to probe your battery to see if you have charging voltage

Looks like a fault on the charging side as the power steering picks up a feed from the alternator on the 2:2 with electric power steering I would check what you got coming out of the alternator then what you got at the battery then check the earth to the engine and body but I would say the fault lied with the alternator

yh thats it evocarlos just needles where shaking like vibrating , cheers guys yh my guess was the alt, got one cheap and wacked it in and sorted. and i have to say what a pain in the getting it out .i had engine mount out , ac pipes out, jack the engine so i could slack the tensoiner jus for the alt, alth think found a leak in cam chain cover. any one know where to get new gasket 4 it?

theres a 3/8 square hole in the tensioner to take the slack off the belt so you can take the belt off
all i can say is you want to try and remove the alternator with a supercharger in the way lol 🙂

lol yh i noticed that after removing the tensioner. if only i had a charger to get in the way :woot:

Ok guys after changin the altternater everything seemed ok! But alas the problem is back drained battery, checked batt putiin out around 12v but alt only puttin about 11.6 v battery terminals on tight but not sure where to look for earth issues, any ideas?

the battery earth is in the top right hand side of the engine bay / shocker strut remove the nut and wipe with either copper grease or bum lube same for the battery terminals
the alternators feed to the battery goes from alternator to starter motor then on to the battery check your wires are all intact
failing finding the fault its prolly best to get someone out to confirm the problem 🙂

nice one ! after checking it turns out that the alts they gave me were duff got a recon in there now, evrything working great, does anyone know if the black plastic rocker coverfrom the yh fits these?

I think they are but you will need a different gasket. Read somewhere on here youll need different bolts too.

cable tray is different and dont bolt down propper tried it on pauls car the fitment is almost the same
