30 mile engine/ECU learning period

I hadn't read about this until just now................ :roll:

My car is a Vectra 2.2 SRI (2001)

I had replaced my cracked exhaust manifold yesterday, had the battery negative disconnected of course, well for 3 seconds at least until the bloody alarm started!!!

Question is, do I need to drive sensibly for 30 miles after re connecting to let the ECU settle in? And if I do, then I will need to start again, I took the car out and was that pleased that it it didn't blow or stink of fumes anymore that I gave it a good hammering................. and no way had I done 30 miles before I caned it!

Time to start again? :oops:

I've never heard of that before, where did you read that?

Everytime i have removed my battery, i have just drove like normal, well, fast-normal !

the z22se ecu works by learning parameters and every time the battery is disconnected for a short period it goes back to default.

The precat removal is a classic time, the old parameters don't suit the better flowing exhaust and the ecu has to adjust.

I've personally experienced a bad set of parameters and had to reset my ecu to get rid of them.

Because of the various mods on my 2.2 I have to take it easy for a fair bit to get a decent set, but it's worth it 😃

Can now speak from experience and it is definitely worth doing.

I've done a gentle(ish) 50 miles tonight in mine and it feels really smooth to drive again, gave it a thrashing on the way home and it's soooooooooo much better without the cracked exhaust manifold! :lol:

A really annoying (because I couldn't find the leak) blowing/rasping sound, and a horrible smell inside the car when I started it up.

The noise was worse when cold.

did the sound go away when hotter and did it stink bad on start up in the cabin the reason i ask is my mate has a rasping soung from cold start drives on his 2.0lastra

The noise went almost as soon as the temp needle moved, I'd thought it must be the EGR at first, that seems to be the culprit in a lot of threads I've read.
The smell wasn't that bad, just a whiff of exhaust, like if you start up and reverse through your own exhaust smoke.

Certainly easy to check the manifold for cracks, on mine it was just a heatshield covering it. Was very obvious that it was cracked.
