i had both 1.8 and 2.2 astras and the 2.2 is leagues ahead! dont belive the figures, it is a much better engine, it pulls from 1000 revs in 3rd faster than most cars can at 3k, meaning that u can go roundabouts in 3rd or 4th, i can get from work to home in5th gear without changing, 2 roundabouts and 4 t junctions 😃 i just have to swing it round at 30mph or above 😃
if the oil is changed in accordance with vauxhalls schedules then the timing chain should not break, if you service it every 5k or so then you will not have a problem! also as others have said, it will almost certainly be the engine with the fixed oil nozzles.

Thanks mate,that was really helpfull,im pleased it's going to be better than the 1.8,im going to see it today so i hope it's all good then i can have some 2.2 power....lol drool.gif

it has been said on hear before but its worth saying again. A rubber timing belt will snap just like that with no warning, the chain will give a bit of noise or rattle. Therefore you can react to it and get it sorted before it breaks. As others have said keep its oil clean and it will last and last.

Did you buy the car in the end ???

the engine was sound but sadly the car's bodywork was very poor,i was really dissapointed as the owner told me on the phone the car was in excellent condition,a cracked front splitter,broken petrol cap,dented doors and a badly rivited repaired front bumper said other wise................good new's is that i have seen a mint 2.2 coupe for sale with only 39k and on an 02 plate for the same money which im going to have a second look at on thursday with the cash in my sky rocket,so hopefully this will be the one 😃

thats a shame mate, nothing worse than bull on the phone, why not be honest ???

Coupe sounds good with only 39k on it. Be sure to check the service records tho, you want proof that the oil has been changed when it should. If you do buy it, chnage the oil and filter as soon as you can, then you know when it was done. I'd suggest you use an engine flush too to get rid of any gunky bits that might be in there.

I'm biased, but I think the coupe is the better looking car..................

Yeah no point in lieing as im going to see the car anyhow,never mind though.
Yeah the 39k astra coupe has a full vauxhall service history and was registered may 02 so hopefully not one of the faulty engines?Will get the oil changed when i get though.
I think the coupe looks better to,this one i hope to get is black with an irmscher grille,rear boot spoiler,4 disk changer and some irmscher interior goodies too,have a feeling this is the one but have to be very cautious still as most people sell a car for a reason 🙂

I know what you mean when you get a feeling for a car, I hated the colour on mine when I saw it at the dealers! But I loved the rest of the car, the colour grew on me and as you don't see this colour on coupes very often I found that I started to love it more and more. Wouldnt change it now.
You should not go too far wrong with full VX history. Maybe he has a good reason for selling, might have loads of kids or a big dog !!!

It sounds good with those extra little bits too. Don't see many black coupes. If you do get it you'll have to get some piccys up on here....

Yeah your's is a rare colour,never seen a coupe in that colour before,i like it,yeah i will get some pics up when and if i get it(finger's crossed).
I have 3 mods planned already....lol 1)Irmscher front splitter 2)Irmscher rear corner skirts 3)Coupe turbo alloys.
Will do some before and after pics to 🙂

just done a hpi check on the car which states its first registered on 17th may 2002 and has engine number 11045060 which falls well into the faulty chain/oil nozzle bracket.
I thought and read on here that engines from march 2002 would be safe?any help? notsure.gif

If the mileage is low and you have full dealer service history, it will defo be worth asking them to change the chain etc before it gets noisy. I had 51k and full history on my 51 plate coupe and they changed mine no probs all free, it was a bit noisey tho.

Wait and see waht others on here have to say, or look thro the various cahin threads on the experiences of others. You might find that the nozzle/chain has already been done. There is a thread on here somewhere about how to check for this.

well i bought the car today,it is mint with a full vauxhall service history and the last service only being done in july,i called the vauxhall recall center and gave them the car's vin number and they said no recall work has ever been carried out and there is no recall's to this car notsure.gif
Cant wait to get some pics up over the weekend 🙂 😃

Word of warning on the VX recall centre thing. They are rubbish. notsure.gif
I rang up one time and they said my car needed its ECU reprogrammed. Fine i thought. I phoned up again about a week later and asked specifically about the chain and they said there were no outstanding items on the car and the chain was not on the list (the ECU thing had magically disapeared?). Spoke to a local vx garage about the chain and they checked the recalls and said it was on the list.
3 completely different stories.
In the end I rang up the dealer who had serviced the car and asked them what had been done on the car....

will keep this in mind mate,im going to my local dealer tomorrow with loads of info on the chian/nozzle issue and hope to get them to replace it all free of charge 😃
