Z22SE Astra MK4 Power Steering Question

Hi guys.

Is it normal to get a light whining kinda sound from the PAS rack/pump? Is this an electric pump and a hydraulic resevoir for the rack? It's not loud but wanna make sure it's normal, for example its LOTS quieter than the noises new mini's make 🙂

Is it recommended to change the fluid, or if it's not broke then don't fix it? The car aint worth loads and I don't wanna start messing and taking the chance of stuff breaking unless it really should be changed. Steering feels fine, still getting used to how it lightens up on corners as my Civic Type R was polybushed and had nice weighty steering.

I assume this pic below shows the resevoir I'm talking about, level wise it's quite near the top on mine so I assume the level is ok.

It is electric on these so you would hear a whining noise whilst turning the wheel.

Looks like my reservoir needs a clean!

lol my engine bay is/was mentally immaculate, it must have been steam cleaned, only problem was i had an oil change last week and the O ring around the oil filter must have had a nick in it and was leaking which has made the engine not quite as clean as it was, gutted!

Thanks for the info. Just thought, to check the level for sure, is it like Corsa B's and the lid has a dipstick of sorts on it?

If anyone can comment if they think its worth changing that'd be helpful 🙂
