Major Timing Chain Headache please help!!

Cheers vocky, yeah I hope so, but what's the best way to check? I thought maybe sweeping a drinking straw around the chamber might find something. Tried poking in a magnet already!

If you cant see anything from up top maybe you need to take the sump off and look up the way

Please don't try and turn the crank 360 degrees with the chains off. I am pretty certain pistons will hit valves if you do this.

I would remove the cam shafts completely. See if all the valves are sitting at the same height once they are removed as any that are bent will not be able to retract fully.

If the valves look ok you can try and turn the crank without fear of bending the valves.

well I can confirm that the crank rotates 360deg with the camshafts in the timing position! It's ok, I'm not going to bend anything with my bare hands.

Success!!! 😃 I retrieved what looks like a pin for a wrench or something from cylinder no 1 using my telescopic magnet and now all is well with the world. I did have to persist and try about 4 times with different bends etc, glad I did.

I don't think I dropped it there, so I can only assume it was in there before I started and that combustion chamber no1 has a textured finish! If I get low compression then I know why!

Good find! It's a good job it wasn't rotating, and that you didn't fire it up with that still in there :eek:

Hehe, it's not my pin!
Engine had a rattle when i bought the car (v cheap) and i thought it judt needed a chain... i was right, the tensioner had failed on the balancer chain but I bet the rattle was this little fella!

What's the condition of the bores then if that was bouncing around in there? Surely they are going to be pitted to buggery??

Yeah maybe, but I'm not about to strip the engine to find out! I'll drive it and see how it goes.

A friend of mine who used to build race engines says there's no way this has been run in the engine because a) it's not battered enough and b) it would have been spat out quickly through the exhaust anyway. Best guess is it was nestled next to a spark plug and fell in when removed. The pin looks like a needle bearing or chain pin

Next problem was the new oil filter didn't fit and the old one was squashed. Found the little plastic spike from a previous one blocking the way. so it was pretty much ineffective. I wonder what more delights are in store?!
Anyway it seems to run ok now it's back together!

Almost every oil filter I've seen removed from a Z22SE / Z22YH is squashed and twisted.

i was quite surprised the one i fitted last november was still straight when it was changed for the one i got off you the other week and the one that was in a week was still straight to lol i'm going to change my oil and filter more often

Yeah but the little o-ring needs to engage otherwise the unfiltered oil just bypasses the filter completely!
