smell of petrol

Afternoon all.
Ive been doing some jobs on burt150's old vectra to try and cure a few problems.
First was a new coolant sensor as I wasnt getting a reading on the guage till the engine had gone over 85deg. But with the new sensor it still does it? could the cool running stat be blocked? Heating in the car works as it should tho and gets quite warm before the temp needle even moves

2nd I was reconnecting the fpr as this was disconnected. Now ive tried in two locations. One before the tb and one from the manifold after tb. The manifold gives poor low down response needing to manage the throttle to stop it stalling when accelerating? I think this is down to over fueling? And before the tb? I couldnt notice a differance to it not being connected at all?

My next problem I have not solved and has got me worried. There is a vent pipe from the cam cover going to a filter down the back of the engine bay (i think normally this would be connected to the induction pipe?). Since owning the car I have smelt petrol fumes from within the car when stationary. Today I pulled the vent pipe off and there is a very strong smell of petrol and smoke coming from this pipe? Any ideas as to what could be causing this?

gauge could be faulty, they do break - get opcom or something similiar and monitor temps
fpr needs to be mounted on either inlet manifold or air intake pipe
cam breather connects to air intake pipe however it can be mounted to a catch tank or filter - i have catch tank and is rerouted back to air intake pipe

coolant temp sensor is mounted in housing before the stat so the stat is irrelevant

smell of fuel can come from anywhere really so you need to start smelling around engine bay, usually exhaust fumes is a sign of leaking zaust manifold or downpipe in vec b's

however smell of fuel on a cold start is indicative of a sports cat as well

Thanks for the reply. I have already located the smell of petrol. It is coming from the cam breather? Just wonderd if it is normal to be able to smell it that strongly? Its just like opening a jerry can and taking a sniff.

Is cam breather going to a catch tank and then a filter?

You could route to a catch tank and back again?

No its going straight to a filter.
I am going to get a catch tank and re-route it back to the induction pipe before TB. Maybe all the petrol fumes might improve mpg lol.

That would be the solution I would go for 🙂, I doubt it will help with MPG but should assist with the fumes.

Many modded cars do have it open to a filter but as said I would route back from a tank to intake pipe.

keeps the slight vacuum as well from the air intake to suck the fumes and gunk into the catch tank
