Clear oil??

I was looking for my oil leak today but only by putting my hand around the area it is coming from.
Got my hand down the back drivers side of engine and found my CV joint.
Whilst moving my hand I pulled it up and it was covered in clear oil.
Now I don't know what clear oil, if any is used.
The only thing I can think of is brake fluid.
It was all around the bottom area (without looking).
Is there anything that uses oil like this in these engines?

Gearbox oil will be a dark red/purple colour, engine oil obviously golden if new, black otherwise. Only thing I can think of is brake fluid that would be clear. Did it have a smell to it?

Have you checked the fluid level in the master reservoir?

It smelt like hydraulic oil or something like that.
Have checked brake tank and still looks same level, opened and it was darker and looked different.
Hopefully it is left over grease or maybe a spray which was used previously to remove parts.
Got oil light now so that's nearly 5 liters it cained through.
Gonna catch what drips tonight and see whats coming out
