01 Astra G 2.2 (Z22SE) engine removal

Morning all,

I am removing the engine from my Astra to replace the clutch, slave cylinder, balance shaft and timing chains rather than doing all the work with the motor in the car. I will also be doing a full service whilst it's out.

Anything else I could look at doing with the engine on the bench? Is it worth getting the head off for a decoke? DIY port & polish?

if you remove the oil pump then the gearbox can be left untouched and the engine will lift out the top quite easily.

Certainly worth doing the balancer delete whilst the engine is out of the car and if you feel like porting the exhaust ports then that will give good results (just open up the ports to the size of the gasket - do not open them any more than that or you might go through the casting !)

Thanks, will be compiling a list of things to do. I might leave the box in place as I need to change the concentric slave cylinder too and don't fancy messing with the pipework.

Definitely worth taking the head off and cleaning up the valves and ports a picture of my head before cleaning it up less than a years difference between my car y reg and yours 01 reg. Some heavy carbon as you can see
