Afternoon Guys,

Not been around for a while had to go and arrange a marriage and get hitched. Now thats over with i can have a proper look at the old Zaf.

I have been having issues with Burning oil and just losing some out the exhaust. Tiop up prehaps 2 lites over 6 /700 miles now of good quality Halfords 10w40.

Am getting different answers from a couple of "Mechanics" so thought would get a better picture with you guys.

Symptoms are as follows:

Loss Of Acceleration and a few flat spots
Noticeable lumpiness if trying to maintain the same revs (but not whn CC is on)
Obviously higher than usual Oil Loss

However i am not really seeing massive plumes of smoke on startup only really if i get it up the rev range and is more a puff of white ( i do a lot of local potting about and dont really thrash it.

However i am getting:

Its Piston Rings
Its Stem Seals

or just a "Sharp Intake of Breath"

So could someone a bit more engine internals savvy than me give me an idea or a couple of checks to do?

It will be the oil scraper rings on the pistons, they gunge up and leave oil behind which gets burned off during combustion

Take it that means the piston rings will need doing then.
Sorry about the silly questions, am handy with a spanner but dont have the nolwedge to back it up

yes mate your proberly gonna need to do the rings! pretty easy to do just time consuming as youve gotta remove quite a lot to get to them! basically you can change them by taking the head and sump off. but youll need rings, conrod bolts, headgasket set etc etc. hope this helps! anything else just meesage me!

Well worth rebuilding the head and doing the chains while it's in bits. If you do it right you'll end up with a perfect engine that's good for thousands more miles.
