Hello all, thought i would introduce myself.
The names Jason and im from South Australia, I have recently purchased an bone stock '03 Astra SRI with an engine problem. its done 138,000kms and smokes like a train!

The Plan:

Rebuild engine
so having rebuilt engines before i thought i would give my hand at this one. all the bearings/seals/rings/gaskets/etc will be done. along with some other engine work that i can do while the engine is out (suggestions would be great)

had the annoyance of the bonnet cable coming off the latch thing near the grill, so had the fun part of cutting the grill up to get it open (ordered a new badge-less one) and have started to take the small and easy stuff out like airbox and battery tray (pictures will come later)

Well other then that here are some pictures.

So any suggestions on what i could do the the engine while its out would be great (eg, porting out the exhaust etc..)

Hello and welcome to the site 🙂

The bearings will most likely still be fine, they seem to last forever on the z22se engine :confused:

The smokey engine will be casued by the oil scraper rings being gunged up on the pistons, clean out the piston groove and fit new rings (y)

Also replace the rear main oil seal if you remove the engine (you can change the rings with the engine in situ).

If you do remove the engine then get the balancer delete done, makes a good difference to the engine

cheers for the help, and with the bearings i have ordered the lot already. depending on how enthusiastic i feel on the day i might replace them. if not then i have some spared just incase.

also have much info on doing the balance shaft delete? i have read alittle about it but have not seen much info.

Basically you just need to remove the balancer shafts, cut them down, push the rear bearing back by 7.5mm and refit the new idler gears you created by chopping down the balancer shafts

its a balance shaft delete kit, i dont really want to cut up my balance shaft and read that a kit was made for it.
has anyone put one of these kits in? cheers, Jason

that is another option, but costs money (balancer delete is free and there are at least 50 cars with this set up in the UK running totally fine)

well the progress of pulling out the engine has started, but with the days being over 35 degrees C im going to be taking it slowly. might make a build forum when i have enough pictures and if anyone is interested.

Cheers guys i will start a thread soon once the engine is out. so far the CV shafts are out, wirelooms are disconnected, Air conditioner is unbolted (trying to leave the gas in to save re-gassing it) but as the tempeture is 45 Degrees C down here i have not got alot done =( but hoping a cool change will be coming soon.

im also fairly new on here and like you have found it very usefull. not new to the z22se, had mine nearly 12 years now. if you plan to tune the engine i would recomend uprating the clutch while you have the engine out and fitting a lightend flywheel and new clutch slave cylinder. i left my clutch standard and it only lasted 30k miles at 170bhp in the vectra B but it did wheigh in at 1.8ton!

Wow 1.8Ton! and i have been thinking about it, but coming from Australia the clutch kits here are well over 1000$ AUD, so alittle too expensive for me at this time. but i will be taking a look at the clutch and depending on how that is i might replace it. but its defiantly on my mind as well, thanks for the Tip!

i had 28 rolls of dynamat extreme in there and quite abit of stereo. i used a helix clutch around £500. worth every penny.
