Cam Profiles?

whats the largest profile cam people are using and still keeping it road legal for mot emissions and good idle?

Phase 1 cams:

Shrick inlet cam 252 degree and 12mm lift and exhaust cam 248 degree and 12mm lift.
Pipercams inlet&exhaust 266 degree and 10.8mm lift.

Pipercams are much cheaper than shrick ones and shrick need much more rpm for the best power than the pipercams. Shrick also needs headwork for double valve springs. Pipercams can be installed with original valve springs. I think that idle is much better with the shrick because of the shorter duration compared to pipercams. I have no experience of the shrick ones but I'm very happy with my pipercams, no loss in low rpm torque but much better above 5000rpm than the original.

i all ready have the shrick cams, twin springs to. would like to go larger maybe up to 280 but unsure if they would still be within spec for emissions on mot? the shrick cams are very good, nice and smooth power.

compcams sell stage 1, stage 2 and stage 3 cams.

The stage 2 will work with an ecu remap, the stage 3 need a standalone or webcon throttle bodies.

what profile are the compcams? doesnt say much about their spec on the website? im getting 170bhp @ 6345rpm, 207nm @ 5330 with the shrick cams mild head work and full exhaust system. would like to get more from it but would rather keep it n/a and road legal. no room for s/c.

schrick cams are pretty much the same bhp as compcams stage 1 cams

There are at least five vx220's running over 200bhp with NA power.

I have a set of stage 2 compcams. they were fitted to my silver coupe but i found they had a lumpy idle untill the CR was increased to about 11.75:1. But once i had the higher CR i had a perfect idle of 750rpm on the MOT emissions sheet. I also found that a standard ecu map will fail mot on emissions but remapped ecu was fine.

thanks for that, where do you use for mapping? ive tried 3 companies, first couldnt get any gain so didnt charge me but left it with vauxhalls latest map at the time and it drove better, next totaly messed it up and left it undriveable below 3000rpm and blamed it on a dodge idle valve which z22se's dont have! then used courteney who did a great job! they dont seem to keen on tuning it futher n/a though, maybe just caught them on a bad day?

I would look at getting a 2.4l inlet manifold and maybe a better exhaust manifold as the diblas is not as free flowing as the tubular manifolds. This should give an extra 10+ bhp with a remap. Plus bolt on rather than opening up the engine again.

I think courteney will only charge RR time as you have a previous map from them.

I had a superchips map on an ecu supplied by AtomX. A few people on here have liked Courtneys work but like others if its not forced induction then it wont boil their bubble while they are doing it, but it doesnt mean you'll get a poor job.

Definately a bigger inlet and exhaust manifold. I used a plenum chamber as my inlet and a lexmaul exhaust manifold which all helped towards a nice sounding engine.

courteney charge for full remap each time you change some thing on the engine, had a dbilas inlet on it years ago but found it lost power once it was hot due to heat soak. phenolic gasket may have cured this? sold it for £300, see its for sale again now. going for 267 cams as they seem to be whats called stage 2 cams, remove balancer shafts, skim head while its apart. been looking into 45mm throttles and 2 stage fuel injection to get good power right through the rev range not just at the top and having a custom made 4/2/1 exhaust manifold as space is very tight at the back of the engine. not sure if i'll have enough room up front for thottles yet? i do love the sound of them on my x20xev not yet seen a z22se on them only in the 2L form. just been browsing exhaust manifolds mentioned and theyve come along way and price has dropped alot since i last looked (probable over 6 years ago!) been busy building the x20xev. seems the way to go and tullet is just up the road from me. thanks guys! Ive not had any experience of ITB Throttle bodies but getting good power delivery throughout the range is possible as ive seen some rr graphs from a zafira z22se.

biggest problem with throttle bodies is the standalone ecu, i want to keep air con and the standard dash in the corsa. as its canbus that would mean using 2 ecu's and idle control valve. dont realy think they would suit this project as its going to be to heavy and more of a cruiser than a racer. maybe on the next project? allready been measuring up engine bays for another z22se swap or the same family of engine!
