Cam Chain Problem

Hi, I was driving back from shopping yesterday and heard this like rattling noise. Was about 500 yrds from home so drove it home slowly. Called the AA out and he said it sounds like the chain will need replacing. I have to call up monday to get it taken to a garage. It was registered 01/04/2002 the engine number 11065983 chassis number W0L0TGF7522203598. Is this one that had to recalled? Also it the chain was replaced in 21/03/2011. If it does need doing what costs am i looking at please. Any advice would be greatly received.

it doesn't matter if it's a new chain or not, it can still fail if oil changes are missed or it was the old style tensioner.

It doesn't matter about what. I bought the car a year ago and have the full service history so it hasn't missed an oil change

any chain kit (old small oil jet, large oil jet or latest z20net tensioner type of chain kit) can still fail, all it takes is something to block the oil feed to the tensioner or oil jet.

But it might be the balancer chain has failed, many people ignore the fact that both chains should be changed and just do the cam chain.

Whats the worst case scenario? Costs? Is there a place to buy kits cheap? Any one know of a good garage nr Northampton area to go?

Hi thanks for that. And they are for my car? sorry if thats a dumb question. Whats the labour time on fitting both? If I find a garage there isn't any reason why I cant buy them and they fitting them because it will be alot cheaper won't it or can I point them in your way? Also i have AA breakdown repair cover which should help a bit

Yes, they will fit your car (timing chain and balance chain kit).

You could purchase them and use a garage of your choice to fit them for you. A couple of people that have bought from us have done just that.

Daz recently looked at the labour time from TIS : Vauxhall Labour Time To Replace Chains, and it's coming out with ~ 6.5 hours to do both chains.

Cool thanks for that. I've got a few numbers of garages for tomorrow then the AA will take it to the garage and if they do need changing etc I'll point them in your direction. Is there a phone number for the shop?

This is very true i only changed cam chain put it all back together only for two rails on the balancer chain to break on me double the work as i had to strip it all down again

Hi, sorted out a garage which was recommended this morning which work colleagues said about. Got the car taken there by the AA. Few hours later rang me and said the noise sounds like the camshaft not the chains. Said the noise isn't there all the time but more the longer the car runs. He said he'll take bottom plate of and have look to see if look at camshaft and ring me back. Called back when i got in from work and he said he's 98% it not chains because it's not a chain noise???? I said what needs to be done so he can its def 100% not chains and he said to take engine apart, and if that was to be done it would be next year before he could do that and that a re con engine fitted would cost me £3000. I'm not mechanically minded so haven't a clue about mechanics but to me all this don't sound right..........well annoyed and don't know what to do next??

What year is your car it sounds dearer than the car is worth If its needed you could buy an engine yourself on e bay get a mechanic to fit it for you for about 500 total cost 1000 max to me it sounds like they are trying to rip you off camshafts don't cost that much brand new if that's the problem. ask around get a second opinion could save you a fortune i'm sure others on this forum will tell you the same thing

You could probably buy the same car again a 2002 for less than 1000 pounds

Yeah exactly what i thought, more like he can't be arsed doing it. he said he would have strip the engine to find what the problem is?

Top cover off engine will tell you if camshafts are damaged i definitely would not use that garage even if it was recommended to you phone a couple of garages describe symptoms to them and you will get a better idea of problem and costs(y)

Will do geez, I'll ring a few in the morning. Hopefully i can the AA to take it there 🙂. Bloody cars lol

That's a blatant rip off. I hate it when they try confusing the situation. Not all garages are like it though so good luck with it.

I've taken a look on the good garage scheme and chosen a few, I live in Higham Ferrers, northants.. So fingers crossed 🙂
