IDI_AMIN
Hello everyone i have just joined today and i am looking for some advice from the more experienced members with the timing chain knowledge i have fitted chain etc and it all seems to be fine timing etc there is one concern when i rotate crankshaft by hand it turns fine but when it does a full turn the chain seems to dip slightly in between the two camshaft sprockets slightly i was wondering if this was normal as i feel everything else i have done is up to standard i was told that if timing was incorrect then engine would lock up when turning crankshaft this has not happened so feel it is all correct I have tried to upload picture from phone to computer to help identifying problem but not connecting for some reason dying to get car back on road any help would be much appreciated
IDI_AMIN Tensioner has been activated it was open when i put it back in recommended by other members as the best way i turned the crankshaft clockwise may have to do timing again was told there was too much slack on one side thanks for the tip anyway i will consider all options again triple and double check everything but its starting to get dark may have to wait till tomorrow appreciate your reply
vocky that is a used chain by the looks of the guide and chain link, so the tensioner is probably not working correctly (n)
IDI_AMIN You are right it is the same old chain i just stripped the cylinder head to clean up carbon and put new stem seals on but did not want to go overboard with new chain and tensioner it is only a y reg but i will take your advice on board if you are suggesting the tensioner is not operating properly thanks for the advice

IDI_AMIN Do you think it would be wise to buy a new chain tensioner i do not fancy buying a chain kit considering year of car against new kit. car can only cost about 500 max doing this work will not increase value of car and have already spent about 100 on new head gasket kit and bearing shells i may possibly go to a scrapyard to get one off another car.the tensioner appears to perform as it should i never had any problems with chain before i took cylinder head off just wanted to give it a good clean up while off the road for 6 months thanks for the feedback anyway bertone
jwalker I would if it was my car, if the chain fails then it's going to cost a lot more to fix than if you had just bought a new chain kit/tensioner
IDI_AMIN Thanks for the feedback troops i think if the worst comes to worst i will buy a new tensioner is it correct that the ones you use now are the Z20net tensioners they look nice and solid .Ideally i would buy a new chain kit but do not have that type of cash spare right now i said before i am desperate to get car back on road been using buses and trains for too long
IDI_AMIN Is it a possibility that the tensioner is not hitting the right spot on the rail i may try this first and if it does not work i will bite the bullet and invest in a new tensioner
sandyc You can get a complete new chain kit on Ebay for £115. Well worth it if you plan on keeping the car long term. If you don't know the history of the car or if it was ever changed then it simply isn't worth the risk re-using it, especially now it's been disturbed. If your tensioner is faulty then chances are the chain will be worn too. Do you really want to do s few hundred miles in it just to have it snap and undo all the work you have just done??
vocky the top guide in your photo has discoloured, this usually means it's going brittle. The fact it has a chunk missing already and the tensioner isn't working 100% means the chain kit probably needs replacing.
IDI_AMIN Thanks for the tips guys(y) it seems as though new chain kit is the best option will have to bite the bullet and invest i have tried it another 3 times and not any different i even tried bringing out the tensioner more but no joy really:banghead: i 've had the car nearly 4 years so it is probably the smart choice to get a new chain kit if not 100% sure of history and also when i stripped initially the timing chain guide rail (right hand side rail) had the top piece broken where the 10mm securing bolt goes it was lying in the bottom of chain area when i took off timing chain cover. This had obviously been kicking up as it had scrape marks on it like it had been coming into contact with the chain so could have potentially have caused more damage. (I plastic welded this back together and it seems fine). so maybe this was the best time to strip engine and do a new chain the more i think about it.Will prolong the life of the engine and give me a few more years of driving hopefully
IDI_AMIN The more i think about it the cost of a chain tensioner alone is about 70 quid and to buy a full chain kit is between 100 - 130 quid depending where you buy it so this seems the logical choice so basically for another 40 quid i will get new everything rails chains sprockets tensioner etc
IDI_AMIN vocky said: if another guide was also broken then it's a wise decision to change the chain kit (y) If its 100% gonna fix that dip in my chain then i will go for it and order one on ebay tonight
IDI_AMIN I take it an aftermarket kit is not a genuine one are there any suggestions about who i should use on ebay i've been thinking about trechii i bought bearing shells from them and they seemed good enough 115.00 or the vauxhall centre 93.00 +6.50 delivery there are a few others reasonably priced ones i'm open to suggestions who i should go for
jwalker This is the one I used, the cheapest genuine kit I think there is: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VAUXHALL-Z22SE-2-2-16V-ASTRA-VECTRA-ZAFIRA-TIMING-CHAIN-KIT-2000-ON-/350557093374?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item519ed4bdfe
IDI_AMIN i will consider them but just a bit pricey i will decide by morning if i order first thing i can get it delivered by wednesday
