Tapping Noise After Service!

I serviced my car on Saturday using 10W40 Semi GM and OE oil filter.
After the new oil was put in. I allowed it to idle for nearly 10 mins. Stopped the engine, changed into some dry clothes, cuppa etc.
Went back out drove it, felt great, then came back and it started to make a tapping noise from the top of the engine, it was almost a diesel-like noise.
So checked the oil level and it was closer to the min than the max.
I put the rest of the bottle in (approx 400ml) and allowed it to idle and circulate. Still no change in note! 🙁
Took her for another spin. No change. Checked filter was inserted correctly which it was. I was stuck.
Off to the mechanic I went who advised it sounds like oil starvation to the head, so he advised i drain a litre of oil and pour in a litre of some performance oil which was a thicker grade of oil than the 10W40 stuff. So got home did this. The litre of oil i let out was nearly black in the space of 3 days and has hardly been moved :woot:.
I ran the car in for a bit, then drove it for 10 mins taking it easy. This time it was slightly quieter than before but it's still there.
Any ideas folks as it would be much appreciated?

i would take off the cam cover to make sure you got oil circulating and being pumped up then i would check tensioner / chain / timing

you can do it all in one really

Update:
Last night as advised by my mechanic, I put engine flush in her and then drained the oil.
I put new oil in this time using 5W30 semi. Ran this in for about 10 - 15 mins and while there was an audible change in sound, it still wasn't right. The tapping noise is still there.

And Mike thanks for the response. Just one thing though i replaced the timing chain in 2010 and have only covered 20k miles since, servicing the car regularly. Would it still be necessary to check this? I'm positive the noise isn't coming from that area. Definitely the top.
I'm at work today so I'm getting my mate to have a look and see what's going on.

it's possible a piece of the oil filter became dislodged during the oil change and has made it's way up to the cylinder head oil restrictor.

the easiest way to check is to whip off the cam cover and see if there is plenty of oil getting there

if you put your hand on the side of the cam cover where the chain is can you feel the chain bouncing off the cover ?

Late update folks!
The noise thankfully isn't coming from the chain there is no rattling noise coming from that side.The noise is coming from across the top of the engine.
My car is going into the garage today and getting fixed. Mechanic suspects that it is the lifters.

Neil, of course lets not rule that one out although when i took the filter out I didn't see any of the filter crumble and it seemed fairly rigid. :cautious:
