driving lights led/smds

Anybody know the rules on DRL’S iv been looking at the leds/smds day light running lights and thought id better see if there are laws on them, carried out a search on google and people say all different things. Halfords site gave some good info.

Although im not sure if its for new cars which drls must be fitted to, they must come on with the ignition and go off when the main beam is switched on or reduce in light intensity, is this the same for a mod to an older car? If this is the case how would you wire it up on an astra g?

Maybe @[deleted] may know the MOT specifics. I was under the impression all post 2011 cars gave to have them fitted from factory now though

I don't know 100% if this is valid in GB to, but as it is an ECE which is an european regulation ECE R48 is saying:

Distance from Ground min. 250mm, max 1500mm
Distance between Lights min. 600mm
Distance between outer egde and light max. 400mm
must switch off when switching on the dim light and must not be running together with dim light, parking light or country beam (exception headlight flasher)

There are driving lights available with integrated circuits to do the switching. you simply connect the three cables to your car. on astra g i wired they as following:

ignition --> there is a cable with ignition signal near the cooling-module (white/pink-box near the front left)
earth --> there are enough connectors in the engine bay
parking-light --> from the cables to the lights

Not 100% sure on mot requirements with them, but i'm sure they have to come on with the ignition and go off when you turn the sidelights on, well thats how there are on a few cars ive seen

thanks for the replies i think i wont bother at the moment ill wait till i need a garage and see what they say as im thinking of hid's as well. altho they are a pain as well with fitting a self leveling system washer jets etc. be a job when i have nothing to do 😉

You dont need self-leveling, just washer jets

You don't even need washer jets. If the jets are fitted then they have to work, if you don't have them then there's nothing to fail the jets on so its a pass. We all retro fit hids on the vec c's as we have projector lenses as standard and theres been no failures in mainland UK, I believe Ireland is different.

The only problem may be not having projectors and beam alignment?

Correct, I forgot the mainland mot is much less strict.

In NORTHERN Ireland you must have washer jets. There has been a number of evo's and accord type r's failing now even though they are factory hids because they have no jets.

thanks for the info 😉 i think hids will now be fitted be a bit better than the rubbish bulbs currently 🙂 i looked for ages at what are suppose to be the new MOT regs but depening on what site it was it's all different.

I bet it's also going to vary quite a bit depending on what garage you end up taking your car to for the MOT as well, especially as it's a new rule.
