ECU/Ignition module problem

Hello. I need some help to fix my daughters Astra G Z22SE Bertone. The story so far. The car just stopped on the road under normal driving conditions and couldn't be restarted. RAC recovered the car and suggested timing chain problem. I tested the compressions all OK so discounted the chain. Plenty of fuel but no spark. Checked the output from the crankshaft sensor, nice clean waveform. Checked the drive lines from ECU to ignition module with a simple LED expecting some actvity, no activity. Replaced the ECU/chip etc. Success the engine started and ran smoothly for 10 minutes or so. Tried to restart no luck, back to the original problem. The question I have is can a faulty ignition module take out the ECU? Can ECUs be repaired DIY? Does anyone have an ignition module circuit?

What else?
I wouldn't mind but she's using my car til it's fixed :-)
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

if the coilpack has shorted out then it could blow the igntion amplifiers inside the ecu, it's cheaper to replace the ecu than repair

where are you m8y if you are near me i got a spare coil pack and i got the ecu with chip and transponder

Vocky you're right, hopefully the solution maybe a bit less drastic.

UPDATE: Once the day cooled down I had another look. The car started and ran for 50 minutes so my diagnosis is completely wrong, nothing is U/S. All the electrics work, cooling fan, windows, A/C and audio system. The engine runs as smooth as silk and revs to 4000 no problem. Wiggled all the plugs and wiring no problem. Turned the engine off and it wouldn't restart. Same symptoms, no spark. Weird weird weird. I've ordered a cheapo ebay fault code reader to see if that sheds more light.
Any advice gratefully received.
