have just had a new cat fitted by a reasonably well known garage chain and its a" none approved type " according to what i have read this may be illegal ?? am i correct? the garage says its march 2002 before approved cats have to be fittedmy car was first registered 27 march 2001 (y reg ) can any body clarify this please ta

Due to legislation introduced by the Government, this is a legal requirement on vehicles registered After March 2001, ie anything with a Y registration or later. Their aim is to improve air quality.

cheers daz have a bit of dispute going on at the mo as previous cat fitted in jan this year was also non approved and they wouldn't honour the guarantee!!!!

In Northern Ireland the mot rules have changed, one of which is regarding cats.

If the car left the factory with a cat then it still must have it fitted for mot - doing away with the march 2001 rule.

Wouldn't be surprised if the mainland mot goes the same way
