engine rattle

hello ,,

i seem to be getting a small engine rattle when holding the revs ..

for example 2nd gear rev to 2500 and then hold the revs am geting the rattling noise..
does the same in every gear if i come off the revs slightly and hold it ..
put the power on and i dont hear it .. only when easing off and holding the revs
am hoping its not my chain or big ends as they have already been done ..
it sounds like worn tappets .. if i rev the engine whilst stopped i dont seem to hear it .. only when driving

Have you checked the heat shield on the manifold?

yeah i checked that .. and also checked the downpipe flexi ...
my flexi vibrates like hell, but i put a bracket round it so that sorted that
so i know its not exhaust linked or heat shield

phoned vx today ... they want £135 for a full set of big end bearings ..
last year they were only like £30 for the full set .. wtf

I got a set off a company called Trechil on Ebay. I think they were about £30 or £40. Its done 1100 miles since I did them along with my rings etc and no problems to report.

already have them fitted to my car ... vx had a two week wait on them so opted for the trechil ..
but a reakon i have done 12-1400 miles on them ... but am pritty sure its them thats causing the rattling

Could be faulty bearings or just bad workmanship fitting them. I cleaned everything with parrafin and clean lint free cloths before applying a liberal coating of of fresh oil when I assembled it all. I also used new conrod bolts torqued up correctly and on fitting each one I checked that everything rotated freely before moving on to the next one.
However if your big ends were badly worn the crank shaft may be damaged.
Its a tough one to call mate.

lol these engines are small fish compaired to the mechanics i do .... whats the point in doing half a job ..
my engine is looked after oil every 6000 miles and plugs every year..also new type chain kit ..
the first time the noise came was like brrrrp metal noise .. so dropped the sump and replaced the shells ...
was no wear to original shells or oil journals etc etc .... measured both new and old shells ... completed job .. no noise after rebuild ... and for the cost of £30 for shells and my own time .. thought i would do that to rule it out ...

once i finish rebuilding my mondeo tdci engine, a will strip again and check my engine and try find whats went wrong ... already have mains and big end bearings sitting aside just incase .. and get a crank to suit

hello again ....
ok started to get a single knocking sound from below... thinking to my self it sounds like the balance chain ... so stripped it down to find the balance chain is loose .. think the tensioner return ratchet is knackerd .. the noise did go away for awhile with a hard rev .. but would come back on idle .. so am thinking this could be the noise am hearing when coming of the revs .. loose chain rattling about
