Head Bolt Question?

How much thread actually goes in to the top of the engine? or how much could i leave the bolts out by, if that makes sense?

I'm looking at making a cutom cover to hide the back of the engine and manifold on my Vec C. wanted to attach it to the 4 rear bolts but undecided weather to use 1mm steel or up to 5mm abs/perspex?

The steel seems a good idea but i'd paint it black anyway, but if i use ABS to match the engine covers, as its 5mm i can also router the edges and shape it to make it look factory fit?

you could always use longer bolts, normal M6 will be ok, you need to tap the original bolts out of the spacers as they have a ridge to prevent them from falling out

Lee is your cover the ally one or the plastic one like mine? If vocky could confirm this, I believe the plastic cover uses shorter bolts than the ally one if so could you not get some ally cam cover bolts and use them?????

I have an ally one in my cellar that I can measure for you to compare.

I only mention it as benny mentioned if I was to make the swap then I would need different bolts to my ones fitted to the plastic lid.

Again vocky could confirm...

the plastic cover uses much longer bolts than the alloy cover

the alloy bolts are about 25mm and the plastic about 45mm

It's plastic at min, but I've got an ally one on its way... Not sure I'll fit it yet, depends how good it polishes up...

How come the thread length is different then, are the ally ones thinner?

They polish up really well :thumbup: If you do decide to swap there was a guy on here looking for a plastic lid last week.

Are the rubber bolt washers interchangeable even though different bolt sizes... Arrive today but couple are missing, only got 12 bolts too but I'm buying a set of the above anyway...
