Chain tensioner

I bought a coupe with timing chain slip, re-built her with all new parts, but then discovered that the piston rings have gone 🙁, my question is, i took the tensioner out tonight whilst stripping the engine back down, and it seems fully extended and wont spring load back, is this normal? Should it be springy? Just to confirm it was a brand new tensioner, i only rebuilt her about 600 miles ago

Needs to be wound back in with a suitable tool(screwdriver) it will then lock back in the retracted position

If it is the z20net tensioner (has a raised bit on the head) then I've never had to retract it before refitting, just push it in so that it's in the chain guide correctly and apply some pressure by pushing it in as you turn it and engage the threads.
