my dirty throttle body...

Apologies if there is a sticky somewhere for this, just point me in the direction and I will be on my way... i did look but couldn’t see one.

In short my 2.2 2002 vectra has been driving like a pig lumpy rough idle loss of power at slow speed in particular. I have changed air and fuel filters the cam chain from hell was changed 18months ago.

I am starting to think about cleaning the throttle body before I ask my mechanic to start blanking egr’s and changings lambda’s (you may have guessed I don’t really know what im talking about)

If any one has a cleaning tb for dummies that would be perfect!

Blanking the EGR is well worth it. Another member on here had an EGR stuck open causing lumpy idle. Its easy to blank, just buy a cheater & blanking plate fron the z22se shop.

To clean the tb you remove the air intake pipe, unplug the tb & remove the 4x10mm bolts. clean with carb cleaner or something similar and refit :thumbup:

thanx, i think i will eventually have to fit the blank plate...sort of building up to it!

will i need to do a ECU re set when i clean the TB ?
how do you do this ?:thumbdown:

Just disconnect the battery for 30 mins to reset the ecu. Id do this before you take the tb off.

Blanking plate is easy. Remove the 2x13mm bolts holding the egr onto head. Fit blanking plate making sure you reuse the metal gasket. Tighten bolts but make sure you only do them up hand tight, dont give them 1 more turn for luck etc. Then fit the cheater. :thumbup:

Ok.....

Iv just been having a mooch at the tb when I noticed over to the drivers side at the bottom of the air filter box a hose that was roughly lined up but in no way connected it seems to come from the front near rhe radiator to the bottom of air filter! Iv just stuck a big jubalie clip on and the car seems to be running great...

Does this make sence? 2 visits to my mechanic and 1 to the main stealer could this have solved the problem?

Result!

After taking the TB off and giving it a good clean the performance has increased dramatically....

I have a couple of questions though!

I noticed what seems to be a slight oil leek coming from the TB or at least directly below it, could this just be that the 4 x10mm screws were not tight enough?

Also when the TB is off you can see a small pipe 10/15mm wide near the top this seems to be quite gunky I didn’t want to start dislodging the crap in it for fear of it falling into the engine! What say yee shall I take another look?

These engines have a oil breather pipe connected to the air intake pipe. The inlet also has other hidden breathers for the engine. This is why it gets gunky/oil in the inlet.
