Long story - but basically my Vectra 2.2 was idling rough, and had a rattling chain on start up - so booked into vauxhalls for diagnostics, 2 days later pick the car up with techs admitting they don't know what problem is - reccomend inlet manifold gasket or throttle unit, but sounds like air leak but they can't find one :eh: So take it to another garage he says not inlet manifold, and cleans out throttle unit and says not that either ! so off I go with a car still rattling and running like c*** - days later and guess what - chain off and car dead !! Called a different dealer who straight away said if your chain rattled it was slack, therefore explaing timing out and that should have been their first check !! Called first dealer and explained what second dealer had said....
Vx tech called me back and said that they have a 'checklist to follow when doing diagnostics - which as I pointed out I wasn't told when I booked the car in ! I was told it was £80.00 for a diagnotic booking, and we WILL find the problem with your car and report back to you before fixing. Well they did call, but to tell me that after 2 hours of looking they still had no idea what it was, and asking me to authorise another £80 worh of diagnostic labour - Which I agreed to as I felt I had no choice really.
They then came back with their recommendation of the inlet manifold gasket (99% sure !!), or throttle unit, and commented underneath saying could even be timing chain as it's noisey !! YES they did mention the chain, but surely if I took the car in there, with a rattling chain and rough idle they should have put 2 and 2 together and investigated that route first ?? I am fuming, and have opened a case with Head office - don't know what good it will do !
The vx tech said if it was his car, given that I wasnt driving it along when the chain went - just tried to start it on the drive and it went - then damage should be minimal, and he would advise taking the cover off, and if no valves visibly bent then put a new chain on and see if I've got away with it - just wondering what you technical guys would think of doing that ?
Also can anyone tell me where Benny is in the country ? may need his help to fix lol
