Using water and mayo on stick - repair or recon prices

Hi all, not been on here for a while but I need some advice. My Zaffy 2.2 has been using loads of water recently ( but not overheating ) and there's always 'mayo' on the dipstick and oil filler cap. There's no sign of oil in the expansion tank though, but it does seem to be using a lot.

My question is - on the asumption that my head gasket is to blame, what is the likely cost of repair or possiblly even supply / fit a recon motor depending on cost ??

if you do the work your self id say £250 with a new chain

Well I won't be doing it myself sadly. I have a lot of mechanical knowledge but no mechanical ability, or tools, or space, or time so I'll need someone to take it on :-)

id say about £400 all in funny how your head gasket has gone they are fairly strong

Take it for a long run and see if the mayo goes, I have this every morning and it's just condensation

Thanks all for the replies so far :-) Although the car has never overheated, the temps did get above normal once when all the coolant got dumped all over the road outside work. I found that the cause of the coolant leak was a crack in the water pump cover - a bottle of Radweld took care of that ( at least for the time being ). I have checked for leaks regularly since and no sign so far. So, the water is going somewhere but where - my footwells are dry ( had a problem with the heater O rings on the previous Zaf ) and can't see any leaks anywhere else.
