overheating! headgasket failure?

hi all, just a quick one, a freind has a 2.2 thats overheating alot, don't think its thermostat, could it be the head gasket at all?

any other ideas?

do a compression test mate is he loosing any water etc

Does it overheat when stationary or on the move??
Check for leaks from the cooling system and the condition of the radiator. May even be the waterpump.
Ask your local garage to do a sniffer test on it too.
Check the whole lot before condemming the head gasket.

hi guys, thanks for your help, hes now informed me its the 2.2 direct engine not the Z22SE but just said to him to check it all out first with compression test, and give the engine a good going over, he's looking into another engine i think just in case even tho i think thats abit extreme so early on but i'll see what happerns.

hes not that local to me so i've not yet seen the car or been able to look at any of the problems but thanks alot for your help so far!
