rattling chain

hello ... today i started my car and the chain was rattling really bad ....
went to work still the same didnt go quite ...

but on the way home from work i have to climb a hill ... the second i climbed the hill the chain rattle went instantly and was nice and quite

am thinking could it be something to do with the oil pickup or the oil pump .. as theres more than enough oil in the sump ......

stripped the the engine side down to check the chain and theres plenty of tension on the cam chain ...

but the balance is really slack .. am guessing thats because theres no oil pressure.. and sounds like the ratchet in the tensioner is goosed

i have a new cam chain kit waiting to go on ... but why did it recover when i drove up a hill

is this the way the tensioner is ment to be when you take it out the block lol ..

I'd say no.. looks like the internals have fallen apart... never removed one in that many bits.

hello all again .

took the car for a drive today and after about 5 miles am now getting a whining noise as the car is going threw the revs ..
its coming from the chain side of the engine .. gets louder as the revs pick up .. any ideas ???

What have you done to it in total... just removed and replaced the tensioner?

hi again thanks for getting back to me.
i fitted a new cam chain kit with the dome style tensioner..

timing is absolute bang on ... i also removed the balance tensioner to check the ratchet was ok and had the timing locked when i did that ,,,

the tensioner for the cams was an effort to put in once i released the pin .. had to use a bit of force to push it in and catch the threads on the block ..

car idles nice and drives ok although it feels like its holding back a little .... apart from the whine everything is nice and quite
i even checked the water pump for play and it was nice and tight

In all honesty i would have relplaced the balance chain kit at the same time.... as the last few i have done the balance chain have been slack on inspection.... ..

Try removing the aux belt and see if the noise is still there,,, if its gone, then ure issue cud be with the alt/tensioner, if its still present , go back over your work..

yeah looks like am going to have to strip ...

but i inspect my work before putting all back together a job should only needing doing once ... a will put more miles on and see if things get better ...

and there was no whine before strip .. so will see what happens over next few days ..

need to find out why it only does it when its hot .. could it be the chain is to tight ?

In the 15 or so chains i have done, ive never had an issue with any.... so cant comment on why only when its hot....

I usually fit the tensioner in its unactivated state, then lever against the rail to activate it... then undo the tensiner and see if its activated,,(tigheter to undo,,)

yeah ive had my fair share of these engines .. from broken to fixed .. and typical mines is the only one with a problem lol

i prefer to release the tensior and test it from its sleep before fitting means only doing it once ...

but i will try your way next time 🙂

In all honesty ive never(touchs large piece of wood) had an issue doin it my way(even mr haynes does it that way) .....
