Tubbe Hello! I Have a problem with my z22se. I have changed both timing chain and balance chain kits and I still get bad rattle when i start the car for the first time of the day. I have driven about 9k miles after the chain change so I think that the parts can still be considered as "new" I also have the z20net tensioner so everything should be okay but I can't find where the problem is. I have always kept the oil level on top of the dipstick so no lack of oil. When i put parts back together i checked that the timing chain isn't slack so i have succesfully "activated" the tensioner. Any help for my problem notsure.gif
comet If it is only for a brief period it may be the hydraulic lifters. I had a x20xev that always rattled on first start up.
Daz No hydraulic lifters on the z22se lump..... Mine used to do it occasionly also,,also after chain change.... what oil are you using in it?
Tubbe The exhaust manifold is leaking not sure if it is the gasket or a crack but leaking anyway. I have just changed the oil and oil filter oil is 5w-40 full synthetic. Also the car sound a bit rough when idling warm I'm thinking that the exhaust side lifters maybe lacking oil or just full of.... something 😃 or the sound comes from the manifold not 100% sure. I'm pretty sure that the problem is the cam chain, the chain came in a genuine gm kit but there may have been a mistake with the chain or some other part because when I put the tensioner to the engine the tensioner "piston" comes as much out as possible to get the chain tight. So there is no tolerance left in the tensioner anymore which is quite funny because the kit is "new". What do you guys think? The car was on the dealer few days ago to check the oil pressure and the car was putting 4 or 5 bar on idle and over 8 when revving, pressures sounds a bit high for my opinion. I'm going to count the new chain links and compare them to the old chain and hope that there is the problem.
vocky oil pressure is normally high on the z22se  max oil pressure is 125 psi or 8 Bar Get the chain checked and also remove the exhaust manifold heatshield and you may see a dark crack between ports 2 and 3 :silent:
Tubbe I think i found the problem. I removed the rocker cover and checked all the timing parts. I couldn't find anything wrong and after a check the tensioner piston haven't fully come out of the tensioner "fork" so no problem there. Then I found a broken exhaust manifold stud 😃 So the manifold is leaking and it is also cracked so hopefully this problem is no solved. Thank you all for help I really appreciate it!

Z22SE manual - "The camshaft rotates directly in the head and operates the sixteen valves via followers and hydraulic tappets......Valve clearances are automatically adjusted by the hydraulic tappets." And my Z22SE certainly does have them 'cos I've seen them.
