What should i do ?????

Hi to all,

My 2005 2.2 died last night :crazy: . Towed to garage. Garage have just told me cam chain adjuster has come away, loosening the cam so messing up the timing !!!!! crunch !!!. cryb.. cryb.. Garage say scrap it as new motor expensive and recons are hard to get hold off . So what do i do next. Need your advice boys-
Do i get the head taken off and see how much damage has been done and try to get a top end rebuild ??? if its possible ?
Do i put it on ebay and sell as spares or repair. ( was in mint condition !!!)
Try and find a replacement z22yh engine ??

Any advice really appreciated !!!

How fast and what were the revs when it went pop?
A replacement head and a new timing chain kit should have it running again. If you know you're way about an engine then it aint a hard job to do.
A head would be about £150
Head Gasket set around £70 complete with new Valve stem seals
Timing chain kit around £120.
A skilled mechanic should be able to do it inside a working day.
Shop around for quotes and a second opinion.

It done 75k with full vaux service history. Started it up and had done bout 1/2 mile at around 40 mph and noticed a clicking sound for about 5 secs. Slowed down to park and the car seemed fine. Got back in started up and reversed back and it just stalled. No real load bangs or noises etc and that was it. Tried to restart it and it just kept turning over.

So try the head off etc ????. Would it have or should it have made orrible noises when the adjuster went ?? dunno..

Hmmm. you may be lucky. Before you take the head off try a new chain kit and see what happens. Then if you have to take the head off you've done most of the work involved in fitting your chain kit to start you off.
If you are reall lucky it may just be a couple of bent valves.

I would say the same. Fit a chain kit, do a compression test and if all pots are the same reading (+- 1bar max) then id say you <u>might</u> have got away with it.......

If you havent then head off replace a couple valves maybe..... Doubt by your description you'd done much more damage. Saying that normally chain tensioners seize up a bit and engine sounds like a diesel for a bit (big warning sign).

Where are you from mate?? If you're not confident doing it then somebody on here may help you out in exchange for a small handful of beer tokens.
However you can find enough info on here to show you how to do it.
I can do the chain in 3 hours but give yourself a clear day. Its not a bad nut and bolt job as long as you take your time and follow the directions to the letter.

repair it yourself, should cost less than £500 including the chain kit :thumbup:

Hi to all,

Pulled the head off at the weekend :clap: Not toooo bad at all. 6 valves bent but bottom end tiptop. So new cam chain kit and get the head sorted and away we go !!!!!

Excellent.
You also have a good opporchancity to do the piston rings while the head is off too.Its not alot of extra work and should leave your engine tiptop.
