Crashed the car - advice please!

Hi all,

I just wanted some advice really. what would you guys do?

I've decided already that I'm not going through insurance. So regarding selling a damaged car etc., what happens?

It's still driveable, has MOT and tax 'til the end of the year. I drove it back from where I had the smash.

So what's the deal? Is it allowed to be driven if someone was to buy it? I would strip it for parts, but if I do that, what do I do with the rest of the car?

ahh gutted for you mate ,how bad a shunt was it ,im guessing the slam panel is bent ,would it be much of job to get it fixed

if your have no intention of fixing ,imho if it was me and i had the room i'd strip every salvagable bit off it ,as you would get more stripping it .then once youve got everything you want off it just scrap the rest and get money again

cheers for the reply mate. I don't know the first thing about breaking cars unfortunately. other wise I would get rid of it all.

I dont know, I have sent some emails to breakers asking for prices for a slam panel, cross member, bumper with fogs and a bonnet. As it is now though, I cant open the bonnet.

by the looks of it the wings are untouched.
but yeah you will need a bumper then graft your splitter back onto it ,a bonnet ,bumper bar ,these can be picked up quite cheap really ,not sure weather the slam panel is welded or bolted ,but depending how hard the impact was as to weather its done any damage to the chassis ,im guessing you had already slowed down before impact as i cant see if the airbag had deployed
have you looked on the astra owners club to see if anyone is breaking a silver astra that way you dont have to fork out for painting

I have asked some of the breakers on the astra forums if they are breaking a silver astra.

I was only doing about 20mph, and yeah slowed down too. no the airbag hasn't deployed. the fact that I can't open my bonnet is annoying, because I won't be able see the damage to slam panel.

thats not that bad, a new bonnet / bumper bar / bumper / slam panel should have that back on the road.

to open the bonnet break off the grille and use a crowbar to get at the lock whilst someone pulls on the bonnet release inside the car :thumbup:

Yeah, they're the parts I am trying to source right now. I have most, but no bumper as yet. I want everything in the same colour to save me spraying anything.

Good idea about the bonnet! I'll have to give that a go tomorrow night! I can see that the slam panel isn't bent, which is a good thing, as Daz brought it to my attention that the slam panel is part of the shell! :roll:

Our Zafira was a total loss with that same damage.

I take it you told the insurance company? I am not going to mention it, and get it fixed. I think I have sourced the parts I need (on first inspection) for around £180, so hopefully I will be able to get it all fitted, and the total not be over £300, which will make me pretty happy.

I went up the back of a Volvo on the motorway. The field engineer from the insurance company called me last week to tell me that the damage amounted to £3383 + VAT. New parts came in at over £1500 then labour and paint. I know parts sourced 2nd hand would be a far cheaper option but I haven't got the time or resource to carry out a repair like what was required. Couldn't really get out of keeping it from the insurance what with the damage to the other car. Doh!

Ahh, yeah, I guess I was lucky that there was no damage at all to the other car! So I told her (the other driver) that if she needed something repaired (from the collision obviously) that I would pay for it. Took a load of pictures of the other car for proof too.
