Another Cam Chain question!

Hi all, posted this in one of the stickies above but might get more views as a new topic:

Just got a vectra 2.2 sri for a song. Not much history with it but no rattles etc. Should I get the chains don or wait for a rattle? Its on 97000. I'm in weston super mare, anyone near me willing to do the job?

Also are there any particular kits I should buy? Ie that may be an improvement over the oe vauxhall one?

The genuine GM chain kits have been revised several times (₁₆ when I spoke to my local VX dealer about it). They new ones have an update chain, guides, tensioner.

There are FAI chain kits available which some members have fitted, that are a lot cheaper than the genuine GM ones, but it's down to how much you want to spend on them.

You should replace the timing chain at no more than 100,000 miles or no more than ten years old

I would advise 80k or 8 years, whichever occurs first

Haha! People will give me anything to stop me singing! Chains defo due then, how much should I pay? My missus won't be pleased! I bought the car with some of our wedding fund!

This is the kit Ive just bought. I was pleasantly surprised when Fedex came knocking and handed me a FAI chain kit.
Even comes with the gasket for the cover. Im getting up early tomorrow to fit it and finally ressurect my car which has been sitting since May due to constraints of time, work, relationships and other people's feckin cars getting in the way.

How pleased would she be if you wasted your wedding cash on a car that destroyed its engine inside 2 weeks and rendered itself scrap??? Marriage is overrated anyway and weddings shouldnt have to cost alot. Registry office, Buffet and free function sweet with a well stocked bar. Sorted, with change from a grand. :-)

Brilliant, I'll get that kit ordered, was thinking it was going to be double that parts wise. Now to find a garage to do the work! :thumbup:

Where are you based?? Im not far from Edinburgh and could tackle it for you on a sunday if required.
£150 a couple of packs of bacon, some rolls and I'll supply the tea/ coffee served by my wonderful GF if she's about.
That kit doesnt include the balance chain. Opinions differ on wether it needs doing.
Failing that apparently a guy called Benny on here does a good job and knows the routine and the engine inside out. Alot of the guys here have gone to him and have been super pleased with the result.

Thanks that is a really kind offer. Unfortunately I live in Weston super Mare, so probably couldn't be much further away! Think I'm faced with taking it to a local garage as I don't want to drive it too far on original chains!

Might be worthwhile checking if that kit comes with the new style tensioner, as from the pic it looks like the old one (not very reliable).
