crunchy 3rd gear

Got a problem with my 3rd gear on my f23 gearbox as sometimes(mainly when cold) it seems to make a crunching noise,well to be honest its more of a buzzing noise really,and sounds and feels like its coming from the gearstick rather than the box,i know it sounds stupid,but has anyone else had the same problem.Surely if it was the syncromech or summat,it would be like it all the time. :crazy:

Quite a few suffer from stiff and crunchy f23 boxes when cold, normally first gear. I believe that there is a field remedy for the amount of gear box oil used. Sure someone can confirm.

mine has had an issue since i've owned. (i'm the second owner)
Its recently got much worse where you have to rev match to get it into 3rd when cold or on the race track.

I've played around with different levels of gearbox oil. everything from 1.75L to 4L and its still the same no matter what.
I've got another gearbox just incase one day this one decided to give up on me.

As mentioned earlier johnny,it did cross my mind about the synchro,but surely it would be like it constantly,i mean on the way home just it was great as soon as the choke shut off. :think:

A buzzing noise through gearstick usualy indicates a lack of oil in the gearbox? or something has worked loose selector cables etc, try changing the oil before suspecting the worse case scenario.

Crunching is def synchro related.

Just been made a call to my friend at Gloucester Road Gearboxes in Bristol and his advice was to try automatic transmission fluid. After that, synchro.

Seriously :think: ,never heard that one before,so what grade should i use,and is it thicker or thinner,than manual oil.

Just been on the phone again. He said its upto you. He can only advise that its what they do as a 1st option to sorting out gear selection problems before removing and stripping the box. There are many types of ATF available but he said go with the red standard fluid, fully synthetic.

Apparently, BMW, Mercedes and Toyota all use ATF as standard.

Atf is alot thinner than ure normal gearoil, and as johnny has said alot of maufactures use it in there maual gearboxs, some even use engine oil in them...

Interesting,well im changing the oil in the box the weekend,so might just stick some atf in then,surely big manufacturers like that wouldent get summat like that wrong. 🙂
