Information please Egr's and chains

Hi Guys
Brand new to the site and after some information if you can help.
I brought a 2.2 sxi vectra c 2002 52 plate in jan this year
everything was ok untill the amnagment light came on after 2 months and had it plugged in , it came up ith egr fault and cruise control faults.
Warrenty didnt cover egr valve so got a second hand one from mega vaux in notts and after that the car ran a bit better , stopped stalling and funny reving however everytime you start the car i still get the orange/yellow car with a spanner sign for about 3 seconds then it goes off, should it have reser by now or could this egr valve be iffy?
Also the car is now using oil , i changed the oil / filter 2 months ago and put in 5/30w full synthetic oil , now every 800miles the oil light comes on and i have to put a litre in it?
Also its starting to sound like a diesel when cold , it is petrol by the way!
Seems a bit slow on up take too?
any suggetsions please help

Hi checkers, welcome to the site.

Have you had the stored fault fully cleared by a fault code reader/tech2/opicom? If not, you can disconnect the battery for 30 minutes and that should clear the fault.

These engines can be known for using quite a bit of oil.

You could try using a thicker 10/40 oil?

no the code has not been reset as i was told it would reset its self after 40 starts? it didnt but the guy said i would have to pay again to have it reset as he dosent live where i do and would have to come back out hence the charge!

I'll try disconncting the battery , will i loose the radio code or is it stored in the ecu on these ?

Yeah i was thinking of putting thicker oil in but was worried it might affect the t-chain.

Thinking of maybe a egr cheater after reading about them

I would disconnect the battery for 30 mins but you will lose the radio code. I would suggest calling into a Vx dealership and asking them to obtain the code first before the reset.
You can also buy a cheap OBDII reader off ebay like i did. Ive used it and it works a treat :thumbup:

sooooo good to find a forum where people are so willing to help ,

anyone no if a timming chain change is a good idea for the performance and noise problems i'm having? i have read about problems with the originals and there was a re call on them or is this only for vectra b's?

also is it worth getting hold of a egr cheater and if so how?

We can also supply both timing chain kits if you do decide to replace them.

There was an entire engine range affected by the smaller nozel, but many people have found engines outside this range with the smaller jet. Last time I spoke with VX about the revisions to the timing chain kit, it's been revised something like 16 times!

Ok so fitted a egr cheater today and everything was going great for about ten min car much more responsive then all of a sudden the manahment light came on and above 3000 rev it sounded as if something was loose turns out the power steering belt was getting chewed up its still on but not by much question is was the management light caused by the cheeter or the belt and how hard is belt replacment £

belt takes 5 mins to change prob cost £10

3/4 ratchet .. theres a square in the tensioner it fits into .. lift tensioner uptowards cams . then slip new belt on ..

check everything turns ok before fitting the belt

cheers for that , it is todays job , price for belt is £12 so providing that is all that is needed then should be a straight forward job , i'm guessing all the rollers are ok as the car still starts and drives with whats left of the belt on and i'm guessing any risistance in these would just rip the belt off but i'll check them anyway ,

This managment light is buggin me though , seem to come on as soon as i was having belt trouble so i'm hoping a new belt fitted and it will go off , if not i'll remove the egr cheater and see if that gets rid of it , (its the engine shapped light bottom right of the dash thats come on not the car with the spanner going through it which came on when i had a faulty egr valve tjough)

You really could do with having the fault codes read to see what it is telling you is wrong.

Still waiting for mine to get delivered , anyway update , changed the belt not too bad a job although i forgot to put the lower cover back on !! only when i dropped the car down did i remember oh well it'll go on without the need to lift up anyway and the light has gone off 😃 😃 😃 , will keep an eye on it over next few days to see if it re apperars but so far so good ,

a point to note my steering is now super easy not like before bloody love it!!

Fault p0404 with my egr fitted. P0404and p0405 when egr cheater and banking plate fitted . Any ideas . Its the engine snapped light that is on car runs fine with either fitted.

Any one want to buy A cheater and banking plate?

The EGR Cheater can store a fault but shouldn't bring the light on. Have you turned the light off by clearing the fault to see if it stays off?
