Possible automatic gearbox fault

Well its my first proper fault in 5 years of ownership but it seems i may have a problem with the automatic gearbox on my 2.2.

Car was making a high pitched whinning / blowing noise at high revs.

Was recovered to a local garage and theyre diagnosis was a fault with the automatic gearbox.

The however dont specialise in automatic gearboxes so advised i take it to a specialist.

Fortunately my AA repair membership covers all aspects of the gearbox upto £475 from any VAT registered garage so i will probably take it to my local network q garage as thats where ive always gotten my car serviced and mot'd without problems.

Does anybody know what outcomes im likely to expect?

Hmm dont think i'll be going down the vauxhall route now, not after they quoted £2500 + Labour for a new gearbox as they dont repair them, just replace.

Most autobox specialists dont repair just the faults. They overhaul completly. Usual cost of overhauls at the place we use for work jobs is bewtween 1k and £1700

Just a thought Titan; have you checked or even changed the oil recently? I have changed the oil a couple of times in my auto box and you can certainly tell the difference!

Just an idea thats all.

To check it there is a dipstick close to the battery with a purple lever.

TBH i dont know the grade but its not the same as the engine, it has a reddish tint to it when you rub it between your fingers. Vx should be able to tell you. Ive always had mine changed at my dealers.

For an Auto box, it's usually Dexron III.

Well vauxhall had it all of today and wouldnt you know it they cant find anything wrong with it.

No one seems to hear what i hear when im driving it, and i know im not imagining it.

When youve owned a car for 5 years new noises stand out like a sore thumb, i just wish it was the same for everyone thats tried to diagnose the problem!

I know what you mean - you have an ear thats tuned to your car!

I would suggest getting the oil changed anyway espcially if its never been done. It doesnt cost that much and you will notice the difference in smoothness and gear change.

I have my oil changed at my local Vx dealers. Give them a call and ask them for a price.

I paid Vauxhall to replace the gear box oil on my old Vectra C (F40 gearbox) and it was about £120 for them to do the work and supply the oil. Not sure if extra work would be involved on the auto box though?

You cant hear it so much on tickover, but when you accelerate it gets louder through all the gears.

Dont have a problem with the performance of the gearbox everything seems o run as smoothly as it always has, just with the added sound effects

After a closer inspection by a trusted mechanic it appears the fault may be with my cat.

Ive had a search and there seem to be a few different manufacturers out there.

Does anyone recommend where i can get hold of one, regardless of price.
