Get a large screwdriver & put the tip to the chain casing and the handle to your ear - you'll hear what's going on inside the engine very clearly.
If it is the chain get both of them done asap - timing chain and balancer. There's a couple of guys on here do them. Benny did mine a couple of months ago, he knows his stuff.
