Help needed bought my vectra c.sri in april cheap trade sale
Running great occasional rattle and thought i would do the chain
This weekend due to finances then last saturday nite went to
Shop car running sweet. Came out of shop started her up and
Rattling nuts off so switched off immediately (i am a techy )
Got a tow home stripped her down yesterday guide completely
Gone bits everywhere. Timing out 4-5 teeth. Got a new kit
From bms leeds £95 for an fai make. Fitted as per manual and
Instructions printed from vocky all seemed fine. Did set 90 btdc
And turned cams to check movement was free all ok no xs gaps
Between cams & followers. So timed back up fitted chain tensioner
Etc rotated twice checked timing ok and was. Fitted covers coil
And everything else. Turned key no compression did get one back
Fire but nothing else wont start just spins over stinks of petrol
And backfire occassionaly.

Also do remember a few years back a work pal did rework
On a vectra b and had similar problem turned out hydraulic lifters
Had been compressed we all thought he had timed up wrong
But no it took ages to fire up do u think this is my problem or
Has any one else got suggestions thanks anybody for advice

no compression's not good, and stinking of fuel means probably no spark on power stroke..... i dont know enough mechanicly to advise im more electrical notsure.gif

Sounds more like bent valves to me i'm afraid to say.

Yeah im gonna rip head off tonite weather and work call out duty
Permitting but must have spark due to backfire thanks for feedback
Will let you know out come when stripped cheers fellas

Hi guys removed inlet manifold. Inlet valves ok but fitted compression
Tester pipe to each cylinder and blew air into cylinders (cams removed)
To ensure all valves closed found air leaking past exhaust valves
So head off tomoro ready for a set of exhaust valves. Will test
Rings for leaks with pistons at mid stroke using brake fluid see
How long it takes to drain past rings then decide on wether to
Change them after result. Priced up valves head kit & bolts
96quid so with price of chain kit less than 200 for job & roughly
10 hours labour. Let u know when done just waiting for parts
To come. While waiting gonna clean tb & block egr port on
Manifold & head

Head off and its the inlets that have hit all 8 but guides are ok
No cracks so new valves seals and head gasket on order cleaning
Exhaust valves and all ports. Cant wait to get back on road with
The sri look a bit daft at 6'2 driving the wifes 206cc

how did you time it up ? ...did you use the lower crank mark as a referance ...?

Yes if you mean the one on cam chain cover and crank pulley and
Also no4 tdc compression stroke

where were the camlobes pointing ?.....on number 4 cylinder .....

Outwards exhaust at 10 inlet at 2

But also found out son also tried to start car while i was work
So it was turned over out of time. When i reset it marks on new chain
Were spot on but damage already done

thats wrong ....inlet needed to point inwards to 10 and the exhurst also inwards to 2 .......

Older benny so got a right rollocking and hes paying for parts now

Well new inlet valves head set all fitted blocked off egr
Started after about 2 mins of crancking ruuns sweet as
Then got up this morning and battery light on so checked
Circuit to make sure i hadnt left a plug off nope
Tested alternator nowt coming out of it damn thing
But do remember a couple of week ago notice headlamps flicker
Which is a sign of alternator problems. So new alternator picked up
From eurocarparts for £85 +vat not bad for a new unit ( not recon)
Fit it tonite After work so thanks to everyone for their input hope i can help

Well after doing valves & chain kit it ran but smoked heavily on hard acceleration
So off with head again drop sump piston out rings goosed.
New ring set and big end bearings £92 from ebay fitted today.
Fired up on second turn of key no smoke. Went for test drive
10 miles alls well wont give hard acceleration for first 500 miles
Then oil & filter change but is alot more responsive. Have taken egr
Pipes off and blanked system. So happy motoring just got front fogs to
Sort out & cruise control but they can wait.
