rattle over 2000 rpm

Hi,

I ran the engine low on oil and it started rattling.
Only rattles a tad during startup and then again when I pass 200-2300 rpm and then continues.. Haven't had the guts to rev it much higher so I'm not sure if it disappears when going higher.

Is this the chain or can it be something else?

Ok so the rattling would be the pistons?

Is it easy to determine if the chain has jumped a tooth?

you need to take the cam cover off to check the chain

I'll take off the cover and check if there's any slack in the chain.

Popped the cover off and for sure I can press the chain down ca 5 mm I guess that's what's causing the rattling.

One question.. changed tha chaing 8000 miles ago (15000 km)
Is it enough to change just the chain or should I change it all?

normally when the z22se engine is run low on oil the big end bearings go dunno..

the chain is loose I can press it down 5 mm without too much force. Maybe that can be considered normal?
Is there any easy way to check the big end bearings how much would have to be removed?

drop sump off and remove the big end bearings caps, not really hard to do on the z22se, about one hour start to finish

I'm not sure what I'll be looking for but I guess it'll be rather obvious?

the sump uses black engine gasket sealant, no gasket present, just clean the surfaces and apply the new sealant :thumbup:

Couldn't get off the compressor.. only had e12 sockets.. have to get me a e12 spanner.
So no sump today.

Is it possible to change the big ends with the engine in place or does it have to be removed?

had to take a big break but now I'm back.

I've remove the sump and removed 2 of the caps.

Can you guys determine if it's needed to change the big ends from these pictures?

Or can you see that even more work has to be done?

I've now become aware the the big ends for sure has to be changed.
My question now is if I only change them without regrinding the crank what kind of mileages can I expect?

really depends on how much damage has been done to the crank, but for £50 for a set of bearings is worth a shot dunno..

Yeah I think I'll just change mine then and see what happens, Vocky do you know where I can find the torgue settings? I guess I can just drop out the sump and do it with the engine in the car!

I'd like to get the car drivable for a few weeks.... All being well I hope to be arranging to come vist you then Lee and Joe sometime in sept or oct! Thinking balancers and SC would be a good start to the winter project! 🙂
