petrol differences

can a different petrol to what you normaly use make the car run richer??

i normaly use shell v power but when i went to devon this week i had to fill up at tesco 🙁 and when i got back i noticed that the exhaust was realy black, which to me would indicate it was running rich.
it wasnt black when i left.
any ideas?

I have heard that the likes of the "big four" supermarkets petrol is cheaperbecause they do not have the cleaning additives or some of the engine protective additives or lubricating additives in them, so that maybe causing the problem.

The V power is 97ron iirc, whereas supermarkets generally tend to be 95ron

v power is being quoted as being 99 ron
the petrol i put in was tesco's 99 octane.
must admit it didnt run as smooth as with the shell one, but why run richer?

well ive just put some bp ultimate in which is only 97 so ill see what happens

V-Power and Tesco's Momentum are pretty similar. I've only used Momentum once, and have used V-Power every other time.

Supermarket fuel comes from the same refineries as the other big well known brands

the difference is additives as they are highly expensive - additives are used to increase the longevity of octane or simply increase it as it is an older supply - also other additives are used based on whether it is petrol or diesel - additives are added at the same time the tankers are filled so it is specific to each range of garages

i wont touch supermarket fuel as i have seen slight differences in fuel economy and engine response

i have to say that it did appear to drink the supermarket fuel a bit more

old man does like 500 miles a week in his veccy B and he wont touch supermarket fuel cos he says it seems to cost him an extra tenner - just seems to drink more of it

would this amount to the increase in richness tho?

it might just be a dirtier fuel that is burning differently
