Can't get EMU light to flash for fault codes!

I have tried the brake and accelerator test on my 2001 Sri to read how many flashes the EMU light gives, but it doesn't seem to work (stays on and won't flash). Also, I don't think I can use the paper clip trick as I have seen. Any suggestions how I can read the faults by making the`EMU flash?

I've seen a code reader that somebody brought on eBay. Anyway, I think I know why the light has come on. I removed the EGR valve 2 weeks ago and fitted a blanking plate and cheater, so why its come on I'm not sure. I think I might disconnect the battery to see if it disappears. Thanks for your reply.

Disconnected the battery for about 20 secs but emu light still stays on. I might have to test the egr valve, and if it still works, refit it to see if the light will go out.

battery needs to be unplugged for min of 20 mins
