Rattle

Hi all I am new to this site and have a problem with my astra coupe z22se

I have a rattle coming from possibly chain/top of engine.... its a metallicaly type of rattle. and occurs around 3000 revs and you can get it to stop at higher revs however i am not liking this sound so havent taken above this much......

I have replaced the timing chain with a complete kit. (tension, cam pulleys, crank pulleys, guides and a chain. The noise is still there. I then noticed upon second strip down that the balance chain tensioner wasnt touching the tension rail so i removed the tensioner reset it and reassembled, the balance chain was then nice and tight......

I then ran the car up to temperature and it sounded sweet as a nut. I then ran it round the block gently and the noise returned and is now there every time i get to 3000rpm...

Can anyone help me on this PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ALSO just for the record I replaced the timing chain because the guide at front of engine had snapped??????? duno whether this helps????

probably the balancer chain tensioner has failed 🙁

Yes,,, I did find that the balance chain tensioner was stuck so i took it out and reset and it seemed to be moving lovely. but the noise came back again after road testing it....
Is this a common problem

As i say the noise isnt there till 3000rpm????

the balancer chain tensioner has a ratchet inside, so if the tension has failed once it means the ratchet is duff and thus the tensioner needs changing

they are starting to fail more often now the engines are getting older

have you any idea on the price of this tensioner?????? or am i better to get a whole balance chain kit????

I cant see the noise being anything else can you. I mean apart from the chain part of this engine the engine seems to be a pretty decent lump.

I recommend replacing both chain kits together due to the age of the engines

but you could just replace the tensioner and see if it's ok

I have already replaced the timing chain kit last weekend!!!!! and that part of it is perfect actually a nice job to do. I replaced that cause the guide had broken thats what i thoight the noise was but obv not lol.....

I may aswell buy a balacne kit and put whole kit on..... Is this quite an ok job in comparison to the timing chain

you have to remove the timing chain to fit the balancer chain :wtf:
